After a short hiatus I have returned. Having spent far too much time trying
to compile a program only to find out it didn't do what I thought it did,
I decided that it was time to take a break from Linux..
BREAK's OVER.
Being a Slackware user for 2+ years now, a friend suggested that I try
RedHat. So I backed up my Slackware setup and installed RedHat 4.1. I have
to say that the RedHat distribution is much more suited to the new user,
in that most of the "hacking" has been handled by the RPM's. While Slackware
is more of a "learning experience" in that many of the niceties of redhat
are not incorporated into Slackware' distribution. If you are a new user
looking to get a decent Linux system up quick I would have to recommend
RedHat. If, on the other hand, you are looking for a challange and more
of a learning experience, go with Slackware.
No Linux system is complete without the addition of X Windows and the best
window manager, with the most fuctionallity, that I have used so far, is
AfterStep. Take a look at my screen capture's for an example of what it
can do.
There are currently some very good programs available for Linux and I am
attempting to put together a list of the more usefull ones (IMHO).
Now, about my system, I am running RedHat 4.1 with XFree86 3.2 from the
infomagic CD set. My hardware consists of a P133 with 32M ram and a 2.5G
Hd of which I have allocated 750M to Linux. My network consists of my Linux
machine, another P133 16M with two 270M hd's, 95 on one drive and Linux
on the other, a 486AMD100 20M 700M hd NT 4 Server and a 486DX66 20M 120M
hd. I have been contemplating removing NT Server from the 486x100 and installing
Linux exclusivley on that one machine. The advantages to this would be
that I would free up disk space and I would still have the Internet services
ie HTTP and FTP. Also, with Samba, I would be able to use it as a application
server for my win apps .
Before you flame me over using Microsoft products let me just say that
I have no choice.
