-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Micro! Deluxe, version 1.0 -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- This game requires: * A 286 or faster IBM-compatible PC (386 or faster strongly recommended) * VGA graphics * Hard disk (approx 1.5 MB free) This game also supports: * Sound Blaster, Roland LAPC-I, Adlib, general MIDI * Joystick ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- == TO SETUP THE GAME == 1. Change to the drive where the game is installed (C:) 2. Change to the subdirectory where you installed the game (CD \MICRODLX) 3. Type MICRODLX, then press ENTER. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- == WINDOWS USERS == * This game has tested fine under Windows on fast CPUs, however slower computers may experience problems. Play the game from DOS for best results. * The sound and/or music may not function properly. This is because the Windows sound drivers often conflict with DOS programs which also use music and sound. Try running the game from DOS. * If the graphics are jittery or flicker, run the program from DOS. The game is faster. NOTE: Running the game from the "DOS Shell" in Windows is NOT the same as running it straight from DOS. Exit Windows completely. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- == NOT ENOUGH FREE MEMORY == * If you are running under Windows, exit completely and run the game from DOS. * If you are running the game from a menu program (like DOSSHELL), exit it. Then, run the game from the DOS prompt. * You need to free up more memory: 1. If you are using DOS 6.0 or later, reboot your computer. When the message "Starting MS-DOS..." appears, press the [F5] key. DOS will bypass all your TSR's, memory managers, and other programs which normally occupy conventional memory. Now try playing the game. 2. Versions earlier than DOS 6.0: you need a boot disk. Below are instructions to create one: (A) Put a blank disk in your A: drive (not your B: drive!). (B) Format the disk with the command: FORMAT A: /S (C) Label this disk and save it -- you'll need it everytime you want to play this game. Reboot your computer with your boot disk in drive A:. After a while, you'll see an "A>" prompt. Follow the first few instructions above which describe how to start the game. NOTE: If you are using "Stacker" or another hard disk compression program, this game must be installed on a different non-compressed drive in order for the boot disk to work. * If you don't want to go through the trouble of creating a boot disk, you can change the sound/music card options to one which requires less memory. MOST: Sound Blaster sound and music LESS: Sound Blaster sound and no music LESS: No Sound Blaster sound and music LEAST: No Sound Blaster sound and no music. NOTE: All other sound device configurations take the same memory. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- == GRAPHICS ARE JITTERY, GAME IS SLOW == * If you are running from Windows, exit completely. This game runs faster when played from the DOS prompt. * If you own a Sound Blaster or compatible and have selected overlapping, digitized sound effects first try single channel sound effects instead. If that doesn't work, try FM synthesis or PC speaker sound effects. * Turn off the music. * Turn off both the music and the sound. == AT THE TOP OF THE SCREEN, ANIMATION FLICKERS OR IS SHEARED == * Your computer can't update the screen fast enough between the VGA's vertical refresh periods. * Exit completely from Windows, then run the game from the DOS prompt. * Try turning off the sound and/or music. * Still flickers?!? Sorry, you'll need to find a faster computer to play the game on (a 386/33 works great). ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- == SOUND CARD OWNERS == The sound was written for the basic Sound Blaster sound card. It has been tested thoroughly at IRQ 7, ADDRESS 220, DMA 1. If your sound card is Sound Blaster compatible the sound should work fine. Be sure to load all software drivers necessary for Sound Blaster emulation (refer to your sound card's manual) before playing the game. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- == HOW TO CONTACT ACUMEN SOFTWARE == U.S. Mail: Acumen Software 404 Stone Church Road Tiverton, RI 02878-2813 Internet E-mail: adrian@mit.edu World-Wide-Web: http://www.mit.edu:8001/afs/athena.mit.edu/user/a/d/adrian/www/acumen.html -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-
