Doom Help Service ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ Zipped Help Library, 4th Edition, 2/4/94 ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ The file doomhelp.zip contains eleven files that constitute all the information that my Doom Help Service Unlimited (heh heh) currently has to offer. This library contains information such as the FAQ, cheat codes, how to make .lmp demos, how to run Doom under windows, information on v1.2 and the PS/2 mouse problem and so on. As many of the individual files say, if you have any comments/suggestions or extra useful information please email me at 'mapleson@cee.hw.ac.uk'. This library will updated periodically, when a reasonable number of significant changes have occured to one or more of the files. I hope you find something of use here, and that it adds to your Doom experience. Incidentally, I would be most grateful if, in the event you do actually use the zip file, you could email me to say what you found useful, and basically just to let me know that you used it - this is just so I know how many people this help is reaching. Thanks! Bye! :) Ian. How to Unzip the Library ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ Enter: unzip doomhelp.zip or: gunzip doomhelp.zip or: pkunzip doomhelp.zip or use an equivalent compatible unzipping program. After unzipping, you will note that, apart from the FAQ, all the help files end with a '.hlp' suffix. Contents of Library ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ doomfaq5.5 The Doom FAQ v5.5, written by Hank Leukart (ap641@cleveland.freenet.edu). doomchts.hlp A complete list of the Doom cheat codes and how to use them. Also included is a summary of controls that you can use in Map mode, and how to use the berserker box when you already have the chainsaw. ftpdoom.hlp A step by step guide on how to ftp shareware Doom from an ftp site. Especially useful if you're unfamiliar with ftp. This file contains a list of ftp sites to choose from (the same list that is in the Doom FAQ). It also shows how to install the game once you get the ftp'd file. demomake.hlp A complete step by step guide to making .lmp demo recordings of your Doom sessions, includes example command lines to demonstrate the various parameters. This file does NOT, however, contain information about making .lmps of modem/network playing sessions. if anyone wishes to send me a complete description of how to do this, feel free to email me. patchinf.hlp A file containing useful hints and tips on updating Doom v1.1 to Doom v1.2 using the 1.2 patch (much of the information in this file equally applies to the other patch files, such as the Shareware patch). This file won't solve all problems, but it will cover a large number of the most frequently encountered ones. notes1_2.hlp A file containing some notes and information on v1.2 compared to v1.1. This does NOT describe new features - it merely covers things such as saved-game compatibility, etc.. It has a description of the PS/2 psycho-mouse problem, some ideas on how to solve it, and a brief explanation of why it occurs. windoom.hlp A file that shows how to run Doom under Windows. Some people have found that running Doom under Windows cures the PS/2 mouse problem. How universal a solution this is I do not know, but one can only try it and see if it works. Note that running Doom under windows can create problems with trying to maintain sound support (especially on OS/2 systems). This help file DOES now have a section on getting the sound going (not written by me) but I would be grateful if, in the event you use this file, you tell me of any improvements/errors/suggestions/etc that you have, or even if it just works for you ok first time. Thanks! :) spoilers.hlp A spoilers file. I've only just started this, so it's very small. Some of it is my own writing, but most of it are extracted posts from alt.games.doom. So far it covers the following questions: 1. Where is the entrance to the decret level in E2? 2. How can I kill the Cyberdemon at the end of episode 2? 3. How can I get into the secret room to the right of the blue key in E2L2? 4. I seem to be missing a secret in E2L2. Any idea where it is? 5. How do I do E1L1 (Hangar)? (this covers the entire level: how to get the power armour outside, how to find the new secret that is in v1.2, and is in fact a complete solution to the entire level). 6. How do I do E1L2 (Nuclear Plant)? (this covers the entire level: how to find the first chainsaw, the chaingun, the backpack, and so on. It is a complete solution to E1L2). 7. How do I do E1L3 (Toxin Refinery)? (this covers: 'How do I raise the bridge?', 'How do I get to the secret level on E1?', and is in fact a complete solution to E1L3). As the file says, this will expand with time, and will probably grow quite fast. If any of you wish to contribute to this file, on the lines of sending me a 'how to solve/do ' type help message, then please feel free to do so and it will be added to the file and credited to you. levelnms.hlp A list of each of the names of the various levels in each episode. A useful little reference! This should help reduce the number of 'I wish I could remember the level names...' comments on a.g.d! :D End of Library Contents Note: I do have many other things such as DEU, DMGRAPH, DMAUD, BSP, a collection of PWADS such as STONES.WAD and a collection of sound files. However, including these here woudl make for a BIG zip file, so if you want any of these things, email me for them, or you can ftp them from: ocf.unt.edu in the directory: /pub/doom or perhaps: /pub/incoming )*------------------------------------------------------------------- This help brought to you by: Ian Mapleson, Department of Computer Science and Electrical Engineering, Heriot Watt University, Riccarton Campus, Edinburgh, Scotland, United Kingdom. email address: mapleson@cee.hw.ac.uk Doom on! :)
