Introduction ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1.1. A Note From The FAQ Maintainer Duke Nukem 3D is really taking off as a game. It has definitely achieved the goal it set out for, technologically destroy Doom as we know it. PC Gamer labeled it as "a true Doom-killer!" The registered version is now being released by 3D Realms. Enjoy! 1.2. What Is Duke Nukem 3D? Duke Nukem 3D is the third installment in the popular Duke Nukem action game series. It began in 1991 when Apogee released Duke Nukem I and continued in 1993 when Duke Nukem II was released. This is an excerpt from the Internet Finger Info from Apogee & 3D Realms Entertainment that describes some more about Duke Nukem 3D. * Duke Nukem 3D -- Picks up where Duke II left off, where Duke heads back to Earth only to find it has been captured. Duke lands on a space station in the first episode, then proceeds to Los Angeles. Cool effects include being able to blow up buildings with the most powerful weapons, fly in a jetpack, or board a subway system. The FILE_ID.DIZ for Duke Nukem 3D also provides a summary of the game. Here is an excerpt from the FILE_ID.DIZ: "Duke blows away everything you know about 3D action games. Blow thru walls, jetpack over buildings, fight underwater--all in a truly interactive game like you have *never* seen." 1.3. What Is 3D Realms? 3D Realms is the label Apogee uses to release their 3D games. They are creating Duke Nukem 3D. So far 3D Realms has released one other game, Terminal Velocity. For more information about 3D Realms read the 3D Realms FAQ found at ftp.uwp.edu in the directory /pub/msdos/games/3drealms/faq; the filename is 3drealms.faq. 1.4. Information On The Various Version Of Duke Nukem 3D ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2.1. What File(s) Do I Need To Obtain For The Shareware Version? The following chart should asist you in deciding what files you need to obtain: Filename | What it is | File Size ============================================================================ 3DDUKE13.ZIP | Duke Nukem 3D v1.3 Shareware Episode - Full File | 5773KB 3DDN13-A.ZIP | Duke Nukem 3D v1.3 Shareware Episode - Split #1/5 | 151KB 3DDN13-B.ZIP | Duke Nukem 3D v1.3 Shareware Episode - Split #2/5 | 1412KB 3DDN13-C.ZIP | Duke Nukem 3D v1.3 Shareware Episode - Split #3/5 | 1412KB 3DDN13-D.ZIP | Duke Nukem 3D v1.3 Shareware Episode - Split #4/5 | 1411KB 3DDN13-E.ZIP | Duke Nukem 3D v1.3 Shareware Episode - Split #5/5 | 1394KB DN3D13PT.ZIP | Duke Nukem 3D v1.3 Shareware Episode - Patch | 1195KB 2.2. Where Can I Find The Shareware Version Of Duke Nukem 3D? There are several places you can find a copy of the shareware version of Duke Nukem 3D. Below are only a few different places. If you have web access you can connect to http://www.3drealms.com/duke3d.html for a bigger, more up to date listing of where to find the shareware version. What Are The System Requirements? The minimum system requirements are a 486 with 8 megs of RAM and VGA graphics. It is, however, strongly recommended that you have a 486DX2/66 with AT LEAST 8 megs of RAM and a local bus video card. SVGA mode requires a Pentium with 16 megs of RAM and a PCI local bus video card. Also SVGA mode requires a VESA complaint video card. If your card isn't VESA complaint you'll need to obtain a driver such as UniVBE. As far as optimal system requirements go they are about a Pentium 100, 16 megs of memory, and a PCI video card with at least 2 megs of video RAM. 2.4. What Kind Of Weapons Are There? There are ten weapons in Duke's arsenal, but only six of them can be used in the shareware version. Those six are described here. More information about the other four can be found in dn3dhelp.exe with v1.3d. They'll be explained in this FAQ shortly. Duke's Foot: This weapon is as weak as they come. Only the seasoned veterans will be able to beat up on enemies using only Duke's Foot. It is there if you run out of all other kinds of ammo, but I would not recommend counting on Duke's Foot. Pistol: You start the game with this weapon, but you just as soon not. It is extremely weak and ineffective. It will take you several shots to kill even the easiest of enemies. Furthermore, it has to reload every 12 shots. The reload is automatically, but you will experience some delay when reloading. Thus, during reload you can't fire back at an enemy. Gun starts: 48 rounds Ammo packs: 12 rounds Maximum ammo: 200 rounds Shotgun: Probably the choice weapon for most gamers. It can do a hell of a lot more damage then the pistol, but is still restricted in that regard. It can't do nearly as much damage as the RPG or pipe bombs. Also, reloading of the shotgun can take some time, but is automatic. Most of the easier enemies go down from one round of the shotgun. Gun starts: 10 rounds Ammo packs: 10 rounds Maximum ammo: 50 rounds Chaingun Cannon: The choice weapon when dispensing of several enemies at once simply because it has incredible speed and power. Due to this guns rapid speed you'll run out of ammo for it quite quickly. Also, this gun has no reloading delay so you can keep right on firing. Gun starts: 50 rounds Ammo packs: 50 rounds Maximum ammo: 200 rounds RPG (Rocket Propelled Gernade): The RPG is an extremely powerful weapon. Use it with care because if you shoot something close by chances are the power from the explosion will also affect you. Just about any enemy can be taking out with one hit by this gun except end bosses. Also, anything close to an enemy when you take one out with the RPG will most likely also explode. Gun starts: 5 Ammo packs: 5 Maximum ammo: 50 Pipe Bombs: By far the pipe bombs are the most fun to fool around with. They work like this: Once you throw a pipe bomb your weapon changes to the pipe bomb trigger. At that point you can detonate the pipe bomb by pressing the fire button or throw another without detonating the first. In order to throw another simply press the key you've designated for pipe bombs (probably the number six). This will change from the trigger, back to pipe bombs. At this point you can throw another pipe bomb. They will then both be denoted by a single use of the trigger. You can throw as many pipe bombs as you like before denoting them. Ammo packs: 5 Maximum ammo: 50 2.5. What Kinds Of Multiplayer Capabilities Are There? There are three types of multiplayer capabilities. First, there is the usual serial link play. Then, there's modem play which requires a 9600 baud modem. Also, network play will also be available. Network play can include up to eight players. However, in the shareware version network play is limited to only four players. 2.6. Where's The Registered Version? It began shipping on May 7. To order call 1-800-3DREALMS. Also, the game first appeared in stores on May 16. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3. The Build Engine ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3.1. What Is The Build Engine? The Build Engine, which is produced by 3D Realms, is the engine used for Duke Nukem 3D and some other games. The Build Engine is much like the engine used in Doom, but with advancements. The Internet Finger Info from Apogee & 3D Realms Entertainment claims these advancements "include looking up & down, reflective floors, mirrors, true rooms above rooms, multi-colored lighting (DOOM only had white lights), moving vehicles, translucent sprites (for ghosts, explosions, windows, etc.), rotating sprites, high-res mode for Pentiums, user-modifiable parameters, underwater swimming, and much more." 3.2. What Makes The Build Engine Better? Quite a few things make the Build Engine better. First of all, the sectors that make up a map can move during gameplay. This allows, for example, doors to swing open and staircases to move. Secondly, the editor is in full 3D mode. With this feature one can play the game as they add and change levels. Next, the frame rate is not limited to 35 frames per second. Also the game can run in unusual chained modes like 360*240. Furthermore, it can run in any VESA mode up to 1600 x 1200, but system requirements will be demanding for a VESA mode of 1600 x 1200. Because the system requirements are so demanding for these VESA modes Duke Nukem 3D doesn't include them. However, as far as the Build Engine is concerned it can handle these modes. In fact, the only video modes Duke supports are 320x200, 640x480, and 800x600. Another great feature will be the 2D map mode can run in two different ways. It can run with either lines for the wall boundaries or it can display a texturized mode which actually shows floor tiles. Finally, the engine supports different glasses. Red-blue glasses will be supported for a pseudo 3D effect and the Crystal Eyes virtual reality glasses for a real virtual reality system. It should be noted that despite the fact the Build Engine has support for these glasses, Duke Nukem 3D doesn't. Perhaps they'll be support with other Build Engine games. 3.3. What Games Use The Build Engine? Duke Nukem 3D (Apogee/3D Realms) Shadow Warrior(Apogee/3D Realms) Blood (Apogee/3D Realms) Witchaven (Capstone/Intracorp) Tekwar (Capstone/Intracorp) Powerslave (Lobotomy Software) Note: Powerslave used to be a 3D Realms project called Ruins: Return of the Gods, but they dropped the project. 3.4. Can Weapons From Other Build Engine Games Be Used In Duke? Unfortunately you can not import weapons from other build engine games into Duke Nukem 3D. The registered version will come with utilities to import graphics and sounds, but importing a weapon would require coding. 3.5. Will The Duke Nukem 3D Editor Be Able To Edit Other Build Games? Yes, but you won't be able to do much at all. The different games have different sector tags and ways of defining what the different sectors do. Thus, you could do some very basic editing, but nothing interesting. 3.6. Who Programmed The Build Engine? The Build Engine was programmed by Ken Silverman. It is owned by 3D Realms. They have agreed to license it to Capstone/Intracorp for games such as Witchaven and Tekwar. In addition, it as also been licensed to Lobotomy Software for Powerslave. Powerslave was originally a project that was going to be done by 3D Realms with the name Ruins: Return of the Gods, but they dropped it. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4. Rich Willoughby also maintains a web site for Duke Nukem 3D at http://rat.org/duke3d/. Introduction Every level has a certain amount of secret areas. These well-hidden areas usually conceal caches of weaponry and/or powerups. At the end of each level, the game informs you of how many secrets you found and how many you missed. The following descriptions will illustrate how to reach each level's secret areas. In addition, I've marked out what I call bonus areas. These are hidden or difficult to reach areas of the map that also conceal items, but aren't part of the secret total for the level. Notes * In these descriptions, the terms Use and Open will mean to walk up to the described object and press the Spacebar. * The Jetpack can obviously be used to access alot these area more easily. As such, I'm not going to describe the use of the Jetpack to reach an area unless it's required. Personally, I think the Jetpack is too valuable to waste getting to an area that, with a little work, can be reached by foot. =) --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Index Episode 1: L.A. Meltdown Level 1: Hollywood Holocaust Level 2: Red Light District Level 3: Death Row [Updated] Level 4: Toxic Dump [Updated] Level 5: The Abyss [Updated] Level 6: Launch Facility --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Episode 1: L.A. Holocaust Level 1: Hollywood Holocaust Secret Areas (8 found out of 8 total) 1. After dropping down the vent to the street, jump onto the crate to your right, then to the building ledge, and finally to the ledge in front of the billboard. An RPG will rise up from the ground to greet you. 2. Jump on to the crate and then the building ledge again, then thru one of the windows. Technically, the area in front of the RPG ammo counts as the Secret. 3. While in secret place #2, walk up to the large poster at the end of the hall and open it to reveal a stash of steroids. 4. Behind the theatre snack counter, use the cash register to reveal a secret alcove near the ceiling on the wall to your right. Walk up to the wall beneath the alcove and slide a little to your right. Click on the wall and a small platform will boost you up. 5. In the projector room, there is a secret door on the wall next to the fire extinguisher. This secret is also reachable from the bathroom by shooting a hole in the air vent over the stalls. You'll find some aliens, some shotgun ammo, and a cacooned woman. 6. Also in the projector room, jump on top of the projector to open a door concealing a secret area with a alien and an RPG. 7. After opening the curtain in the projector room, use an RPG or pipebomb on the center of the movie screen to find some aliens, some more shotgun ammo, and a jetpack. 8. There's a secret area in the building behind the palm tree next to the theatre's front entrance. Near the end of the level, you'll have to cross a small bridge, overlooking the back entrance to the movie theatre. Before crossing, drop down to the ledge underneath the doorway leading to the bridge. Walk around the ledge to the front of the building, all the way to the palm tree. Jump on top of the tree and then through the window of the building. Inside you'll find a shotgun, an RPG, a chaingun, and some pipebombs. Bonus Areas A. After finding Secret #3, go out one of the windows next to the poster and land on the ledge. On the far end of the ledge is a healing atom. This can also be reached from outside, by first jumping on the edge of the burning dumpster, then to the top of the no parking sign, and finally to the ledge. B. Jump on the garbage can outside the arcade entrance and then hit the spacebar to open the hidden alcove above you. Jump in to the alcove to get some night vision goggles, some pipebombs, and a small healing kit. C. Inside the arcade, use the Duke Nukem II video game to hear a great one-liner and reveal a holoduke hidden in the wall. D. You'll need a jetpack to reach this bonus area. Starting in front of the movie theatre's back doors, fly straight up. Eventually, you'll reach a small alcove, guarded by two gun turrets. Destroy the two turrets, so you can reach the jetpack and two boxes of shotgun ammo safely. E. Use a pipebomb or RPG in the air shaft in the bathroom, where it makes a 90 degree turn. You'll find a small niche containing a Holoduke. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Level 2: Red Light District Secret Areas (8 found out of 8 total) 1. In the main part of the bookstore, the middle bookcase along the wall conceals some pipebombs and armor. 2. Jump on top of the bookcases behind the bookstore counter. In the corner opposite the security monitor, a secret door conceals a holoduke. 3. In the darkened corridor leading from the bookstore to the elevator, there's a small side passage. Inside you'll find an alien, a pigcop, and a healing atom. 4. This sewer area is accessible two different ways: a) After reaching the yellow key in the reckage of the demolished building, use an RPG or pipebomb to blow off the nearby sewer lid. b) In the dance club bathroom, use the toilet (not a urinal). This will unlock a secret door behind it, which leads to the sewer area. Inside you'll find an octobrain, some pigcops, a cocooned woman, and many items. 5. As you enter dance floor through the garage door, there's a bench in the corner to your left. When you step on the bench, a secret door behind the two dancing girls on the opposite wall opens. You'll need to run to make it in time; you can repeat the sequence as many times as necessary to reach it. Inside is a chaingun and some ammo. 6. Blow open the air vent in the corner of the dance floor. Use the table to jump into the vent. It leads to backstage; along the way, you'll find a healing atom. 7. This ledge next to dance floor curtain controls holds a pair of night vision goggles. Jump to it from the ledge leading to the dance clubs's attic from the stage. 8. In the dance club's attic, there's a lit section of the wall next to the two crates. Open it to reveal a medkit. Bonus Areas A. In the bookstore's bathroom, use the hand drying machine to open a nitch in the wall between the the hand dryer and the toilet stall. Inside you'll find a pair of night vision goggles. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Level 3: Death Row [Updated] Secret Areas (10 found out of 10 total) 1. After lowering the electric chair with the switch in the control room, crawl into the area behind the chair to find a shotgun and some ammo. 2. In the church, stand along the back wall, and face the altar. You should see a switch above the altar; shoot it and a platform will raise you into the rafters. You'll find some armor and a dead monk hanging from the ceiling. Also, shoot the monk to get a healing atom. 3. Shoot out both stain glass windows. Behind the one you'll find a dose of steroids. Use the altar itself to open a door to a passage behind the other window. Back there, you'll find an octobrain, a chaingun, and a "DOOMed space marine"! =) 4. In the jail cell with the toilet, use the bench to open a crawlspace. You'll find some RPG ammo inside. 5. In the turret area, there are small ledges on either side of the locked door. Hop on one the ledges, and then on to turret's level. You should see another ledge on the side of the wall above the locked door. Hop on this ledge and walk through the to find some healing atoms. 6. In the turret area, above where you pick up the red key, there's a weak spot in the wall. You'll need to hop to the turret's level, as mentioned in secret #5, to be able to jump in. Shoot the weak spot to reveal some steroids and another weak spot. Shoot it to open to reveal a back way into cell block 1. 7. This secret is practically impossible to reach without a jetpack. A weak spot in the wall here can be destroyed to reveal an alien and a teleporter. Use the teleporter to beam to a small room with some aliens and RPG ammo. Instead of using the teleporter, you could simply fly up the waterfall which exits this secret area. 13. This secret is also difficult to reach without a jetpack. Blow away the fan hear to reveal a small area containing a healing atom. 14. Hug the left wall during the rapids area of the sewer. You should catch on a small outcropping in the wall. Blow open the wall to reveal some aliens, some ammo, and the secret switch to take you to level 6! Bonus Areas [New!] A. Where To Find Maps Of The Secrets http://rat.org/duke3d/secrets.html 5.4. Other Things To Try A slow, but easy way to gain health is to drink some water. In order to do this you'll need to shot at a fire hydrant, a toliet, or a urinal. That will cause it to explode and shot out water. Now walk close to the water and drink away by press the open button or key. A great way to obtain 10 health is to use the bathroom. All you have to do is walk up to a toliet or urinal and press the open button or key. This will cause Duke to say "Ahhh... much better" and give you 10 health. The laser triggered mines can be set off with the RPG or a pipebomb. 5.5. How Do I Edit The .CON Files? Take a look at The Unofficial Duke Nukem 3D .CON File Hacker's Guide maintained by Ben Cantrick. It is found at http://rat.org/duke3d/faq.html and http://users1.ee.net/tgreco/confaq.html. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6. References Found Within Episode One ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6.1. Movies/Songs In the level one bathroom a telephone number is on the wall by the urinals. Is the number purely random and just to generate an ombiance? Nope, the number, 867-5309 is from a song. The song is called "Jenny" by Tommy Tutone. "Jenny" was a song about a guy who saw Jenny's number on a bathroom wall and kept bugging her. There are three lines that Duke says that are references to Evil Dead 2 and Army Of Darkness. First, one of the level setting is "Come get some". Another is, sometimes when Duke picks up a weapon he says "Groovy". Finally, often he says "That's gotta hurt," when he hits an enemy with RPG. In addition to saying these lines, Duke uses a raspy voice similar to that of Evil Dead 2 and Army Of Darkness. In level three near the end you'll see a sunken submarine. If you look close enough you'll notice the name of the sub is USS DALLAS. That is a reference to Tom Clancy's movie/book "The Hunt For Red October". The central US sub hunting for the soviet sub "Red October" was called the "USS Dallas." Level three takes you to a prision cell. In one of the prision cells there is a poster of a girl. However, the poster is transparent and you can walk right through it. That reveals a hidden tunnel which leads out of the prision. Following the tunnel is a great deal of sewage. This is a reference to the movie/book "The Shawshank Redemption." Stephen King was the author of the book. The movie stared Tim Robbins and Morgan Freedman. Often times through out the game you'll see a girl trapped in some slime. She says "Kill Me" which is a reference to the movie "Aliens." The voice of this character is that of Colleen Compton, one of two female employees at Apogee/3D Realms. 6.2. O.J. Simpson In the beginning of level one a large billboard style sign over looks the area. The sign reads "Innocent ?" which is a reference to how some people feel on the O.J. Simpson verdict. The TV at the far end of the bar in level two shows a famous chase scene. On the TV is O.J. Simpson's white Bronco being chased by a police car. In Episode 3 there another billboard that says "Guilty!" 6.3. Other Computer Games Perhaps the most unexpected reference you'll see is the space marine. He can be found behind the cross in the level three chapel. To get there, first, shot the glass to the left of the cross. Then, activate the switch on the altar. This will cause a hidden door to open behind were the glass once was and also turn the cross upside down. When you go through the door you'll soon be attacked by an octabrain. Once you defeat the octabrain, you'll be able to continue walking down the hidden tunnel. At the end is a person caught in green slime and also with his legs cut off. Duke's reaction is "That's one DOOMED space marine." Clearly a reference to ID's DOOM, which is probably the best known 3D action game. In level 5 there is a "Dopefish Lives" message on the bottom of the first pilar leading up to the space ship. The Dopefish a character that originally appear in the Commander Keen series. Those games were put out by Apogee and ID. A good argument can be made that Apogee and ID's claim to early fame was the Commander Keen series. There is also a reference to Dark Forces (episode 2), Quake (episode 3), and Rise of the Triad (episode 1).
