Temporary Internet Files Settings dialog box

Check for newer versions of stored pages

Every visit to the page

Specifies that when you return to a page you viewed previously, Internet Explorer should check to see whether it changed since you last viewed it. If the page has changed, Internet Explorer displays the new page and stores it in the Temporary Internet Files folder. Usually this is the "cache" folder in your installation directory, such as "c:\MSIE40\cache". Internet Explorer checks for changes once per session.

Note that selecting this option can slow down browsing between viewed pages.

Every time you start Internet Explorer

Specifies whether, when you start Internet Explorer, Internet Explorer should check to see whether all previously viewed pages have changed since you last viewed them.

Selecting this check box can speed up browsing between viewed pages. Internet Explorer will check for new content on this page only when you start Internet Explorer.

Never

Specifies whether, when you return to a page you viewed previously, Internet Explorer should never check to see whether the page has changed since you last viewed it. Selecting this check box speeds up browsing between viewed pages.

If you want to see whether a specific page has been updated even when this check box is selected, click the View menu, and then click Refresh.

Current folder

Displays the folder where your temporary Internet files are currently being stored. Usually this is the "cache" folder in your installation directory, such as "c:\MSIE40\cache".

Amount of disk space to use

Specifies the percentage of disk space to use for the Temporary Internet Files folder. When you view a new page on the Web, Internet Explorer temporarily stores it (and some of its contents, such as graphics files) on your hard disk. This increases the speed at which previously viewed pages are displayed.

The more disk space you allot to the folder, the more pages Internet Explorer can store on your hard disk. If you are low on disk space, you might want to set this option to a lower percentage.
