Supported Browsers

RealPlayer 4.01 works with almost all popular World Wide Web browsers, including: Netscape Navigator and Microsoft Internet Explorer. Windows 95 and NT users should have a 32-bit browser and a 32-bit winsock. Some Internet Service Providers only support 16-bit winsocks. In this case users should have a 16-bit browser and a 16-bit winsock and they should install the 16-bit RealPlayer. Windows 3.1 users should have a 16-bit browser and a 16-bit winsock. With some less common browsers, you may need to manually configure your browser using the Manually Configuring Your Browser instructions.

If you have Netscape Communicator, and you receive a security warning when you click RealVideo or RealAudio content, use the following procedure:

  1. Select Open It.
  2. Uncheck the box, "Always ask before opening this type of file".
  3. Click OK.

    Playback Quality

Files are transmitted to RealPlayer 4.01 in RealAudio or RealVideo format. For optimal video quality and performance your monitor should be set to 16-bit (thousands) or 24-bit (millions).

Windows Only: By default, the Player produces 16-bit 8 kHz sound. If you hear garbled audio then you can change the kind of sound the RealPlayer program produces. To change the kind of sound produced, select Preferences from the View menu. Select the Advanced tab.

If you receive poor quality audio, please see our FAQ entry on sound quality by going to http://www.real.com/help.html and selecting FAQ. From there, select Audio Quality.

Please note that to receive 28.8 Kbps content you should have at least a 19.2 Kbps connection to your Internet Service Provider. Using a 19.2 Kbps connection you may hear slight gaps in the audio.

Dial-up users should be sure to keep the network connection preference as UDP (the default). In TCP mode, no audio packets are lost, but their arrival may be late enough to cause gapping in the audio. TCP mode is useful when you are directly connected (via a local area network) to the Internet.

    Troubleshooting

If you experience problems with the RealPlayer 4.01, please look at the documentation available on our Technical Support web page.

RealPlayer uses port 7070 for TCP and ports 6970 through 7170 inclusive for UDP transmission. If you are accessing the Internet through a firewall, your firewall administrator will need to authorize these ports. Firewall information is available on our Firewall web page.
