═══ 1. Extended Help for ReView ═══ The ReView program is a document imaging tool for scanning, viewing and indexing bitmap images. Help is available any time you press the F1 key from anywhere within the program. Because this is context sensitive help, the help information that is displayed depends on where in the program F1 was selected. For instance, you receive help for the File pull-down on the action bar when you highlight File and press F1. However, this is not the same help that is displayed when you press F1 while the Open Documents choice in the File pull-down is highlighted. Press Esc at any time to view the previous help window or to return to the ReView window if there are no other help windows. ═══ 2. Help for Database Access ═══ From the Document Access Window, the user may Add, Delete, Edit, Search, or View documents. The currently selected folder contents are displayed in a list covering most of the window. To perform any action on an existing document, it must be selected (indicated by inverse colors). To select a document, the user clicks the left mouse button while pointing to the document of interest. While selected, the user may View, Delete, or Edit the document. A shortcut to view a document is to double-click on the document name. To view the contents of a different folder, select a folder from the folders drop-down list. After selecting a folder, All of the documents in the folder will be displayed. To search for specific documents, click on the Search button and enter a keyword to find. You may select the sort method from this dialog also. ═══ 3. Help for Acquire New Documents ═══ Documents are composed of one or more pages. Pages may be imported from existing image files or faxes, or received from a supported scanner. The pages which are joined together to form a document may be combined from any source in any order. For example, a document may have a fax as its first page followed by ten pages received from a scanner. New documents are created by using the Acquire New Documents window as described below. To open the Acquire Documents window click on the icon on the toolbar. You may get images from arbitrary files (including bitmaps and faxes) by pressing the Import button, or from a TWAIN compatible scanner if one is connected to the system. Each page, as it is acquired, will appear as a thumbnail view in the window. A blue square indicates the starting page of a selected range (red is used to indicate the ending page). By pressing the left mouse button, the user may select the starting page. By double-clicking the left mouse button, the user may view a page in the viewing window. Clicking the right mouse button will select the ending page of a range of pages. A range of pages indicates which pages will be Deleted, or Stored to form a document. If no pages are selected, all pages will be considered selected. If the ending page is not specified, it will be assumed that the last page available is this page. ═══ 4. Help for File ═══ Use the File pull-down choices, or the toolbar to: Open Document... Display the Document Access Window. Open File... Display an image file in the viewer. Export Page... Save the current page to an image file. Print... the current document or image file. or Exit the program. When ReView starts, the menu items Export Page..., Close, and Print... will be grayed out. These items will become available when a document or file is open in the viewer. ═══ 5. Help for Open Document... ═══ Use this icon or menu item to open the Document Access window. From here, you may select a document for viewing. ═══ 6. Help for Open File... ═══ Use this menu item to open an image file. ReView will automatically detect the file type such as GIF, TIFF, and open a view of the first page. Use this option to view FAXes or other images that have not been added to the database. ═══ 7. Help for Close ═══ Use this menu item to close the current file and free the memory associated with the displayed image. If scanning large color images, this option might be necessary to prevent the swapper file from becoming too full. ═══ 8. Help for Export Page... ═══ Use this menu item to save the currently displayed page. If modifications were done to the image such as rotation, the image will be saved the way it appears. Images may be saved in a variety of formats to facilitate exchanging files between applications. If a multipage document is open, only the current page is saved. ═══ 9. Help for Batch Convert... ═══ Use this menu item to convert a directory full of image files from one format to another. Any valid image files in the source directory will be converted from any source format to a specified destination format. Any of the image manipulation options of ReView such as rotation can be performed on the images during conversion. An option exists to delete the source image files after successful conversion. ═══ 10. Help for Print... ═══ Use this icon or menu item to print a range of pages to a graphics printer. The three print options are useful for the following conditions: Fit to page If the image is larger or smaller than the printed page supports, this option will shrink or stretch the image as necessary to cover the majority of space on the page. Actual Size If the image width is 1000 pixels at 200dpi, it occupied five inches when it was created; this option will stretch or shrink the image to that it would be five inches wide on the printer as well. One-to-one When printing dithered images, stretching or shrinking the image can produce unwanted patterns or distortions. Use this option to guarantee that one document pixel becomes one printer pixel. This is also useful when the source images' resolution information is not correct. ═══ 11. Help for Exiting ReView ═══ Use this menu item to end the ReView program. If modifications were made to an image being viewed, they will not be saved automatically. If any pages are remaining in the Acquire New Documents Window, you will be prompted before they are deleted. ═══ 12. Help for Edit ═══ Use the Edit pull-down choices, or the toolbar to: Copy the selected region to the clipboard. Paste the clipboard contents to become the new image. Copy Page being viewed to the clipboard. Resize... the current page to an arbitrary size. Crop the current page to the selected area. Rotate the current page 90, 180 or 270 degrees. Invert the colors of the current page. Flip Vertical Flip Horizontal Scale to FAX the current page if it is monochrome. Scale x2 the current page if it is monochrome. Update Thumbnail Send modifications back to the page in the Acquire Window. ═══ 13. Help for Copy ═══ Use this icon or menu item to copy the contents of the selection rectangle to the OS/2 Clipboard. If the clipboard had any data in it, it will be overwritten by the new data. This menu item will only be available when a selection rectangle exists, otherwise it will be disabled. ═══ 14. Help for Paste ═══ Use this icon or menu item to create a new document from the contents of the OS/2 Clipboard. This menu item will only be available when bitmap data is present in the clipboard, otherwise it will be grayed out. If there was page being viewed, it will be replaced by the contents of the clipboard. ═══ 15. Help for Copy Page ═══ Use this menu item to copy the entire page being viewed to the OS/2 clipboard. ═══ 16. Help for Crop ═══ Use this menu item to crop the current page to the selection rectangle. The selected area will become the current page. This menu item will only be available when a selection rectangle is present. ═══ 17. Help for Resize ═══ Use this menu item to change the size of the current page. The height and width of the image can be changed independently to produce non-proportional shrinking or stretching of the bitmap. This option is only available for color images. ═══ 18. Help for Invert ═══ Use this icon or menu item to invert the color of the currently open page. This will turn all white pixels to black and all black pixels to white. The actual page is modified not just the view. If the page is saved, it will be saved the way it is displayed. ═══ 19. Help for Flip Vertical ═══ Use this icon or menu item to flip the current page top to bottom. The actual page is modified not just the view. If the page is saved, it will be saved the way it is displayed. ═══ 20. Help for Flip Horizontal ═══ Use this icon or menu item to flip the current page left to right (mirror image). The actual page is modified not just the view. If the page is saved, it will be saved the way it is displayed. ═══ 21. Help for Scale to Fax ═══ Use this menu item to scale the current image to fit in the standard fax width of 1728 pixels horizontally. This option is only available for monochrome images since they may be saved in FAX compatible files. This option is useful for images that were scanned at a higher or lower resolution than the standard fax resolution (200 dpi). Both the horizontal and vertical directions are scaled proportionately so as not to distort the aspect ratio of the original image. Because of the technique ReView uses to scale images, very little image degradation should be noticeable after performing this function. The actual page is modified not just the view. If the page is saved, it will be saved the way it is displayed. ═══ 22. Help for Scale x2 ═══ Use this menu item to scale the current image to twice its original size in both the x and y directions. Because of the way ReView stores images internally, this option is only available when viewing monochrome images. This option is useful for changing the target resolution of an image. The actual page is modified not just the view. If the page is saved, it will be saved the way it is displayed. ═══ 23. Help for Rotate ═══ Use this menu item to rotate the image by 90, 180 or 270 degrees. This option is useful for fixing images that have been scanned upside-down (180 degrees), or sideways (90,270 degrees). The actual page is modified not just the view. If the page is saved, it will be saved the way it is displayed. ═══ 24. Help for Rotate 90 degrees ═══ Use this menu item to rotate the image by 90 degrees clockwise. This option is useful for fixing images that have been scanned sideways. The actual page is modified not just the view. If the page is saved, it will be saved the way it is displayed. ═══ 25. Help for Rotate 180 degrees ═══ Use this menu item to rotate the image by 180 degrees. This option is useful for fixing images that have been scanned upside-down. The actual page is modified not just the view. If the page is saved, it will be saved the way it is displayed. ═══ 26. Help for Rotate 270 degrees ═══ Use this menu item to rotate the image by 270 degrees clockwise. This option is useful for fixing images that have been scanned upside-down and backwards. The actual page is modified not just the view. If the page is saved, it will be saved the way it is displayed. ═══ 27. Help for Update Thumbnail ═══ When a page from the Acquire New Documents Window is displayed in the main viewer window by double-clicking on it, a new and independent copy of the image is what is displayed. You may make modifications to the image in the viewer, but for them to affect the page in the Acquire Window, changes must be sent back with this option. After you have completed all modifications to the image in the viewer, use this option to send those changes to the page in the Acquire Window. ═══ 28. Help for Administration ═══ Use the Administration pull-down choices to: Configure... the scanner and drive for where documents will be stored. Maintenance... Or perform maintenance on the database or documents. ═══ 29. Help for Configure ═══ Before creating documents, you must define which drive the database will reside on, which drive will be the default document drive, and which drive temporary images created during the acquire process will be stored on. Each folder may reside on a different drive, but the default drive will be used if a different one is not specified at the time a folder is created. This dialog will also allow you to select which TWAIN source (scanner driver) will be in use for scanning in new documents. (See the ReView user guide for instructions on how to use the scanner drivers). ═══ 30. Help for Keyboard ═══ The following keys are recognized by the ReView image viewer: o F1 - Pressing F1 at any time will display a context sensitive help panel; this includes menu items and dialog boxes. o Arrow keys - These keys are used to pan around the document currently being viewed. o Pg Up/Pg Dn - When viewing a page which does not fit completely within the window, these keys will advance the current view a screen-full up or down. o + - Has the same effect as clicking on the zoom-in icon or menu item. o - - Has the same effect as clicking on the zoom-out icon or menu item. o ESC - Exits from all dialogs the same as pressing the CANCEL button. ═══ 31. Help for Maintenance ═══ Use this menu item to perform various maintenance functions on the database and documents, such as: o Copy the contents of a folder. o Delete the contents of a folder. o Regenerate the database index from the individual image files. ═══ 32. Help for View ═══ Use the View pull-down choices, or the toolbar to: Next Page Go to the next page. Previous Page Go to the previous page. Goto Page... Go to a specific page. 100% Scale the view to 100%. Fit to Width Scale the view to fit the width of the window. Fit to Window Scale the view to fit entirely in the width. Zoom Out Zoom to a wider view by 10%. Zoom In Zoom to a narrow view by 10%. ═══ 33. Help for Next Page ═══ Use this icon or menu item to go to the next page of a multi-page document. If the document contains only one page, this option will not be available. ═══ 34. Help for Previous Page ═══ Use this icon or menu item to go to the previous page of a multi-page document. If the document contains only one page, this option will not be available. ═══ 35. Help for Goto Page ═══ Use this icon or menu item to go directly to a specific page in a multi-page document. If the document contains only one page, this option will not be available. ═══ 36. Help for 100% ═══ Use this icon or menu item to show the currently open page at a 100% scale. 100% in this case means that one document pixel corresponds to one screen pixel. ═══ 37. Help for Fit to Width ═══ Use this icon or menu item to show the currently open page so that it fits entirely within the width of the viewing window. This option is useful for scanned documents containing text. Because of the scaling technique used by ReView, a typical fax document can be legible when viewed on a VGA display with this scale. ═══ 38. Help for Fit to Window ═══ Use this icon or menu item to show the currently open page so that it fits entirely within the viewing window. This option is automatically chosen when a document is first opened or pasted into ReView. ═══ 39. Help for Zoom In ═══ Use this icon or menu item to zoom in by 10%. The view will narrow, but remain centered on the original spot as you zoom in farther and farther. You may zoom until the displayed image is 100% its original size. Clicking on the toolbar icon will perform the same action as selecting the Zoom In menu item. ═══ 40. Help for Zoom Out ═══ Use this icon or menu item to zoom out by 10%. The view will widen, but remain centered on the original spot as you zoom out farther and farther. You may zoom until the displayed image is 10% its original size. Clicking on the toolbar icon will perform the same action as selecting the Zoom Out menu item. ═══ 41. The Options Menu ═══ Use the Options pull-down choices to set Preferences, convert the current image to Gray, Modify the bits per pixel, and Lighten or Darken the image. ═══ 42. Help for Preferences ═══ Use this menu item to display the Preferences dialog box. You many choose the default view scale (when each page loads), the contrast level used for drawing monochrome images, and which user interface features to enable or disable. As the mouse is moved over the toolbar or menu items, a help message will be displayed in the status line at the bottom of the screen. This feature may be disabled by unchecking one of the user interface checkboxes. You may also choose whether or not to display the status line and toolbar. ═══ 43. Help for Color->Gray ═══ Use this menu item to change the current image from color to grayscale. This option will modify the palette of a 4 or 8 bpp image, or directly modify the content of a 24 bpp image. Selecting this function a second time will have not effect since the image will already have been converted to gray. The intensity for each color is computed as follows: 25% red, 50% green, 25% blue. These values are summed to produce an intensity level with R=G=B. ═══ 44. Help for Color Modification ═══ Use this menu item to change the number of bits per pixel of the current page. You may convert an image to more or less bits per pixel. Converting an image to more bits per pixel may sound like a useless option, but there are times when you would like to add more color to an image than was there previously. For example, if you would like to add color to a monochrome image, the majority of paint programs will only let you edit it in black and white. With ReView, you can first convert the bi-level image to a 16-color image, then use your favorite paint program to add color. When converting an image to 4bpp (16-colors) the default VGA palette will be used since the majority of times, this is the desired target palette. When converting to fewer bits per pixel, you may choose one of three options: 1) Best Color Choices - This option will simply pick the best match for each color in the target bit density. This is the fastest option, but will usually give the least desirable results. 2) Ordered Dither - This option uses a Bayer ordered dither pattern to reduce the number of colors. This option is quick and will give reasonable results, but will have a noticeable pattern in the output. This is sometimes the best option for doing black and white printouts. 3) Error Diffusion - This option uses a Floyd-Steinberg error diffusion filter to reduce the number of colors. This is the most processor intensive option, but will yield the most visually pleasing results of the three. The resulting image will have a slight graininess to it, but there should be no noticeable pattern to the dots. After using any of the above options, the image will probably appear distorted if viewed at a zoom of anything other than 100%. This is because the pattern of dots must be fully intact to see the image correctly. When viewing at a scale other than 100%, some of the pixels must be ignored in order to squeeze the entire image into fewer pixels. Click with the right mouse button to zoom in to 100% if the image looks strange after conversion. ═══ 45. Help for Brighten ═══ Use this menu item to increase the overall brightness of an image. If the image is 4 or 8bpp, the palette entries will be modified, not the image data itself. For systems will 16-color displays, the change will not necessarily be noticeable since the video display is limited to a fixed set of colors. Systems with 256 or more colors on the video display will see the change immediately. For 24bpp images, the original image data will be modified since there is no color palette. ═══ 46. Help for Darken ═══ Use this menu item to decrease the overall brightness of an image. ═══ 47. Help for Photo CD Options ═══ Since Photo CD images contain several resolutions simultaneously, it is necessary to choose a resolution before loading the image. The choice of bit densities is given because the poster sized image (3072x2048) can consume a huge quantity of memory and by loading a grayscale image, it not only uses less memory, but it can be loaded much more quickly. ═══ 48. Help for Regenerating the Index ═══ If, for some reason, the ReView database is deleted or corrupted, it is possible to regenerate the database from the document images. Each document is stored as a multipage image file with it's database record appended to the end of the file. After specifying a drive letter, this function will search all directories below IMAGES and re-create all of the folders and document info in the database. ═══ 49. Help for Delete Folder ═══ This option allows one to delete all the documents in a folder and the folder itself. The image files associated with each document are permanently deleted can cannot be restored after this operation. Choose a folder name from the list presented and click OK to delete the folder. ═══ 50. Help for Copy Folder ═══ This option allows one to make a copy of all the documents in a folder for backup purposes or to transfer to another machine. Select a folder from the list presented and type a destination drive letter. The image files will be copied to the destination drive and may be added to another database by doing a database regenerate on that system. ═══ 51. Help for Search ═══ The Search dialog serves two purposes: o To select the sort criteria for documents displayed in the Document Access window. o To search selected fields which match a given keyword. After typing in a keyword, the display option will automatically be set to matching and a search will be done when OK is clicked. To redisplay the entire contents of a folder, click the all radio button. ═══ 52. Help for Creating a new document ═══ When creating a new document, several of the fields are required, others are optional and will use default data if none is entered. The following are the required fields: o Document Name - The document must be unique and can be up to 20 characters in length. o Description - The description field can be up to 60 characters in length. The following fields are optional: o Original Date - This field represents the date that the information was actually created. The date the document was created is automatically entered by ReView. If no date is entered, the date 7/4/1776 is used to place the document at the end of the list if the list is sorted in date order. o Keywords - Up to 32 characters of keywords may be entered. Keywords should be separated by spaces and can be used to find documents from the Search dialog. o Comments - Up to 128 characters may be entered in the comments field. o Author - Up to 20 characters may be entered for the author name. If no name is entered, the name ZZZ is used to place the document at the bottom of the list when sorted by author. The two checkboxes at the bottom of the dialog are useful when creating a succession of documents with similar information. The auto unique feature will increment a number on the end of the document name. ═══ 53. Help for Editing a document ═══ All of a document's data fields may be edited. To add or removed pages from an existing document, click on the re-acquire button which will separate the document into all of its pages in the acquire window. The pages may then be re-combined with new pages to form a new document. ═══ 54. Help for Creating a new folder ═══ Enter a unique name for each folder up to 20 characters in length. Each folder may reside on a different logical drive. The drive letter will initially be the default documents drive, but may be changed to any valid drive. ═══ 55. Help for Acquire options ═══ These three options govern the following behavior: o When acquiring new pages either from a scanner or from imported files, each page will normally be added to the end of the list. When the insert box is checked, pages will be inserted at the current selection point (the blue outline). After the next set of pages are scanned or imported, the option will automatically be unchecked. o ReView may be used to create multipage image files from scanned or imported files instead of storing them in the database. When the save to file option is checked, the Store button will allow saving the pages to a file instead of a document. This option will automatically be unchecked after a file is saved. o When scanning two-sided documents on a scanner which only scans one side of the page, it will be necessary to scan a range of pages and then flip them over to scan the other side. Checking the duplex option will store a range of pages with the assumption that they have been scanned in this manner. For example, a set of 8 double-sided pages would be scanned in the following order: 1,3,5,7,8,6,4,2. Checking this option will re-arrange the pages when they are stored in a file or document. This option will automatically be unchecked after a file or document is stored.
