As I mentioned previously.... _IF_ one already uses SCSI devices it's no big deal however, the majority of systems today, are sold with IDE and the _average_ user will continue purchasing IDE. I don't profess to be an expert at anything related to pc's however, I've been fooling with them long enough to know that there's usually a "work around" for most problems, including purchasing a SCSI PCMCIA card. My point was and still is, if my system is IDE and I've been purchasing IDE devices since that's what works with my system, is it _MY_ fault it won't work or isn't supported by OS/2 when OS/2 wasn't even a consideration at the time? I think not. I still don't believe I'm in the minority on this issue. In this echo maybe I am, but not with the average PC user's. Even tho I'd heard of OS/2 for a long time, but considered it to be in the same class as Unix.... ie; not for the masses. It wasn't until a few years ago that I started to see OS/2 in a totally different light and realized it was an alternative to WIN9x. Even then, I didn't seriously consider changing to OS/2 until a few months ago. Over the years, I had collected several IDE devices and still don't own any SCSI. Well, not quite true... I gave my youngest daughter a 486/50 I had purchased used, that was ALL SCSI ie: 1x CD-R & HD, with the floppy running off the Adaptec card. And at one time several years ago, I also had 2 NEC SCSI CD changers on the BBS, running off a non-bios'd card along with my IDE CD's and HD's. I only got those because a local Sysop was transferred to Germany and was taking his BBS down and selling parts at a price I couldn't pass up. Since you were an _existing_ SCSI user, it would be logical for you to use those devices with your notebook, even if it meant purchasing a SCSI PCMCIA card. The 4 machines I have in this room are all IDE, 2 of which, aren't supported by OS/2 ie; the External HP 7200 CD-RW and my Internal HP 7500 CD-RW. The 7500 _IS_ supported as a CD-R only and even the RJS software won't recognize it. PK> In 1988 SCSI was still new enough to be considered something PK> special, and occasionally it was difficult to get drivers for some PK> devices, but these days its just another connection method that is PK> well supported in a wide variety of environments. I certainly PK> prefer using it whenever I can, regardless of OS Again, that's your preference. I simply can't justify dumping what I already have and purchasing SCSI devices just to use it with OS/2. On this, I probably _AM_ in the minority, but that's "my" preference to utilize as much of what I already have. Anyway, the CD-RW isn't a critical issue regarding my using OS/2 but the Internet connectivity is. I can still use WIN9x for any CD's I need to burn. I'm not trying to be argumentative, just trying to make the point that OS/2, regardless of how good it may be, _can_ be very expensive for someone switching from any other OS unless, equipment purchases were made with the thought of a possible OS switch sometime in the future or they already owned OS/2 supported equipment. Contrary to the views expressed by others, just because an item was "targeted" towards the WIN9x user, doesn't in itself, make the item junk. If that were the case, why then, would companies like HP and others, continue to prosper? If they continuously produced inferior products, they certainly couldn't survive in today's market. It's just unfortunate that most of their (CD) products aren't supported by OS/2 or OS/2 related software. BTW, thanks to all those that offered support and suggestions regarding the ATAPI ZIP drives. Got both of 'em working on both OS/2 machines. Have a GREAT one! The /ET command line option is for SCSI devices that has multiple addressable units (logical units - LUNs for short). From the OS/2 Warp Command Reference online book about the /ET command line option: Search SCSI devices for logical units (LUNs). If any attached SCSI devices support multiple addressable units, then this parameter should be set. Certain CD-ROM drives that handle multiple CD-ROMs require this parameter. In October last year, there was some discussion in the OS2hardware forum on the Internet.... there were several points to note : 1. Optical.Sys may not be what you need ? 2. Try obtaining (depending upon your FP level) : N512DASD.FLT OS2DASD.DMD Though the remarks were referring to MO drives, I think this is were you might look for the solution as I'm not sure that 'Optical.Sys' is used now (IOW it's been superceded by the above newer drivers ?). Here's a quote from one of the posts on this topic : (from David Wei) >> **With FixPak 6 or newer (or NEWDASD) and N512DASD.FLT... that's all >> **the driver you will need... Fujitsu recently had a IDE model... >> **well... I don't recommand IDE, especially for a removable drive... >> **:) And here below are the commands needed in the OS/2 Config.Sys : BASEDEV=N512DASD.FLT BASEDEV=OS2DASD.DMD /RF /OF /V Finally .... I'm not sure about te order within the Config.Sys as I think it is order sensative..... others may clue you in here ? SoundBlaster cards have no drivers, either. Just set the SB environment variables, and any programs which know how to use a SoundBlaster will end up using the Crystal card. They could also use the Crystal card's native functions, if they knew how. What you're missing is that DOS doesn't have anything like a universal audio interface, which a sound card driver would provide. Mike Ruskai thannymeister@yahoo.com ...
