Like most companies there's almost no information on doing the update on os/2 but I did track down how to do it in NT at: http://www.matrox.com/mga/tech_supp/faq/bios_install_nt.htm the NT info was useful because NT has the same problem with the patch method as os/2: since it's protected mode you have to use a boot disk and NTFS can't be read by a simple dos boot floppy. From reading the bios instructions it seems like I should expect the bios UPDBIOS util to say something more Like the NT instructions say: "Run the BIOS update file. From the A:\ prompt and with the floppy containing the BIOS files in drive A, type UPDBIOS and hit enter. The BIOS update procedure will begin, and text will begin scrolling on the screen. Note: You will see one line of text saying "Bad command or file name". That is ok and the BIOS update will still proceed normally." How can I verify the bios was actually updated on the card? Maybe some bios version string will flash up at boot time? Note, I did flip the bios write allow switch on my Matrox Millenium 4M. I got the dos boot disk by converting a ibm thinkpad bios update utility disk from the www.pc.ibm.com site/thinkpad/support area, they use ibm dos for that. (just needed to clean off the files for that contained the thinkpad bios and update utility) One thing I didn't follow the instructions on, I cleaned off all the other bios files except the 838-20, I figured that since all I needed was the millenium one (838-20) why put the others on. This happens on the desktop, seamless WINOS2, fullscreen PM programs, and DOS programs--ie it is always there. I'd have to guess that this is a problem in the nucleus driver. The previously reported problems with dual displays in DOS VDM's remain the same--probably due to deficiencies in the IBM gradd model. But for the S3 Trio 64 V2 (775) chipset, a GRADD driver isn't necessary. The S3 drivers for that chipset work well and fast at higher resolutions (such as the 1024x768x65k colors I'm using now). I doubt SDD/2 will be much faster since this is a fairly low end chipset, but I could be wrong. Where SDD/2 has me interested is cards/chipsets for which there are no other hardware accelerated os/2 drivers (3dfx for example). > Anyway, I expect to see more GRADD drivers soon, based on > the deal IBM made with Scitech. Too bad something like this > couldn't have happened years ago, when it would have > helped with games, FS Dive, etc :( It is a step forward, but I'm not sure if it would have helped much years ago. Years ago support for OS/2 was somewhat more widespread among video card manufacturers from what I remember (the mainstream companies were more interested when Warp 3 was introduced and being "advertised" (I use the word loosely *smile) to the home market and a fair number had somewhat up to date os/2 drivers on their web pages). Also, the GRADD driver model wasn't available at that time, I'd guess it would have been much harder to program universal drivers without it. Now that most video card/chipset manufacturers are no longer interested in OS/2 (Matrox, S3, and ATI? being exceptions) having a third party produce drivers is a wonderful situation. From: "Frank Jones" As it is a holiday today and the local stores are closed, I thought I would try one more time to get a definitive answer to my problem before I spend more money, and this group may just be the place for it! Problem: on an initial powerup I get a black screen after the OS2 "blob", it can take 2or3 resets to get the OS/2 logo to display (though it seems that using Hardware detection [F5 from the Alt+F1 screen] will cause the logo to load OK a "system freeze" can then sometimes happen doing any mouse operation in OS/2-PM); also, the system freezes when using Word6 under Winos2, (load document, page down a few times -> system stopped [keyboard, mouse, non-functional and Warpcentre clock stopped] - reset buttton the only recourse)... I am using Warp4 - no fixpacks, with a brand new ASUS P2B-B motherboard, and a Cirrus Logic CL-GD54M30 PCI video card. The Doc for the MB says: "... To install a PCI card, you need to set something called the INT (interrupt) assignment. Since all the PCI slots on this motherboard use an INTA #, be sure that the jumpers on your PCI cards are set to INTA. ...." the Video card specs says: "J2 allows you to enable/disable INTA. Close J2 to enable INTA. INTA is disabled by default. ..." However, the 5430 does not have a "J2 jumper" on the board. Is this the cause of my problems? ie. the 5430 not having INTA enabled, would cause these "random" freezes? IF this is the case, would anybody have recommendations for a good AGP Video card - I am currently leaning towards the Matrox G200 AGP card... I have very little knowledge of this "stuff"! - is INTA another way of saying IRQ 10? or is it something completely different? BIOS allocates IRQ 9 for the display, and "Rmview /da" shows a PCI device using IRQ 9, and though it is not registered with OS/2 as the Video display, it, to my mind, must be the one being used for this purpose. In, fact it is shown as used for the Video in the "other" OS I have installed, on which I can't really use any pgms, as the OS freezes almost immediately when attempting to run any applicattion. I don't think that is the problem, as long as the card is configured in the BIOS. What may be the problem other tan a possible NFG card, is that you have not installed the correct drivers correctly, which is similar to the instructions below: Here are 10 easy {:-) steps for installing the updated CL GD542X (k542x-d3.zip) drivers for seamless, fresh, trouble free performance. I spent a lot of time figuring this out (>10 hours), as I initially (Dec 93) had many problems (2theMax VESA LB card drivers). Note: While not all these steps may be essential for the new drivers, they remain the most sure way to ensure correct installation. Read the 'clinst21.txt' file in the unzipped 'k542x-d3.zip' file. 1. Relax, this will take a while 2. From the Cirrus drivers discs, copy 'CLMODE.EXE' to 'c:\' 3. (a) download and unzip the latest (mine were: k542x-d3.zip 94-03-22) drivers for OS/2 (b) READ (Install from the hard drive:) in the 'clinst21.txt' file in the unzipped 'k542x-d3.zip' file. 4. Install the drivers in 'C:\DISP_1' N.B. the underline character 5. Restore VGA mode as in pg. 338 in the OS/2 2.1 manual --> boot 6. 'DSPINSTL' the SVGA generic driver (to enable SVGA ON for hardware compatibility) --> boot 7. From OS/2 full screen, type 'SVGA ON' 8. On a command line, type 'CLMODE' which will give you the 'cl mode utility program' to select your monitor type and frequency 9. (a) Run from 'Disp_1' the 'clinst21.cmd' program, which will then DSPINSTL the 'Display Driver Install' Program. (b) Select under the 'Primary Display', the 'Cirrus Logic 542x Blitter Driver'. (c) Select 'Install Using Display Adapter Utility Program'. (d) Enter the 'Monitor Configuration / Selection Utility Location' as C:\CLMODE.EXE m7 ( or what your monitor type is), wait for the monitor configuration check. (e) Select your preferred resolution. (f) Finally, specify the 'Source Directory' by sequentially selecting: 'Change, C:, Set, Change, Disp_1, Set, Install' (g) --> boot 10. You should now have the proper display. Do not use any 'WIN31' (i.e. k542x-d4.zip) or 'SETRES' programs as they will not allow for seamless operation. Confirming the rest of adapters are solely PCI and how they are jumpered and/or whether any legacy resources have been disabled in Bios ? 2. Whether moving Video card to top(priority) slot(or conversely the bottom,g>) makes any difference? 3. Perhaps outputting results of RMVIEW? 4. Whether either setting H/W detection off in HW Mgr properties or selecting "use previous" after successful boot works subsequently? 5. Whether PnP is disabled in Bios? 6. Using ALT + F2 at white OS/2 blob after which driver does system freeze? 7. Whether you used CHECKINI (or equivalent) in case system is stalling prior to loading WPS and not just specifically video related initialising the desktop? The possibilities seem to include whether system is freezing due to resource conflict or due to driver/desktop issue? While you may have good reasons not to automatically apply a FP and the symptoms don't appear to support the old WarpCenter timing/race problem with GA can you temporarily(if not already done) remove any WARPCENTER,LAUNCHPAD,PROGRAMS and CONNECTIONS from AUTOSTART stanza (leaving FOLDERS,TASKLIST) and also confirm SET RESTARTOBJECTS=NO is in config.sys? While I can't say personally whether the video driver level (or res x color depth) is pertinent at this stage it might help posting these details for others with similar h/w to compare? Depending on level of your desktop customisation and integrity of any Desktop Archives then restoring to either VGA and/or original install desktop might be necessary at some time- if nothing else just to preclude the possibility of unrepairable INI corruption? Whether INTA refers to address groupings or edge v level sensing hopefully others can confirm or correct. I might be tempted to also suggest d/l the newer CHKDSK(32 bit) from IBM site(assuming it's still available) in lieu of later FP and running that from boot/utility diskettes? But it's value rather depends on what FS you've elected? I bought the Asus 3800 and sold it right away, replacing it with a used Matrix G200. Why? The Riva os/2 drivers are stuck at 60hz for all modes! There's no way I'm running my beautiful 21" Trinitron at 60hz! The G200 pretty much sucks for 3D games, but the OS/2 (and win9x/nt) 2D drivers are top-notch. I was about to return the card cause ATI said in a german comp mag they plan to bring out Rage128 OS/2 drivers. So I bought the card cause it's cheaper than TNT2, Vodoo 3 or G400. I'm not a big gamer, but I thought some of my old 3D games might improve a little bit. Then I got a reply from ATI marketing saying no way for OS/2 drivers. And my dealer said no way of taking the card back since I explicitly requested the card and did not buy from stock. Should have been alarmed that no local dealer had it on stock here. So I had the option of 60Hz flicker or paying I think 80 bucks for SDD/2. Now I'm hopeful I will get SDD/2 with FP12 or DDFP of OS/2 Warp or in the videopak on the ftp server like the GRADD drivers. But I'm also waiting eagerly for the Win98 AMD is sending me as a replacement for my old Win95A cause it's not working with AMD K6-II 400 MHz. So I don't need OS/2 drivers that dearly. But the ATI PCI drivers don't work well with the AGP card, I tell you. Right now I'm still using my old P/100, ASUS TP4N PC with ELSA graphic card. At least ELSA knows what it means to support a product over all platforms.
