3.3 Installation of The Developer Connection Catalog

The Developer Connection for OS/2 Volume 9 and Special Edition CD-ROMs contain a collection of IBM and third-party and generally available pre-release products, sample programs, software demos and manuals to help you develop an OS/2 application.

You need to install The Developer Connection Catalog to have access to these products.

To install The Developer Connection Catalog, follow the installation procedure of The Developer Connection for OS/2 Volume 9 Special Edition. The installation program allows you to set up The Developer Connection to run either from your local hard disk or from the CD-ROM. If you have enough free space on your hard disk, we recommend you to install it on your hard disk for better performance of The Developer Connection Catalog. If you have to save hard disk space, The Developer Connection for OS/2 Volume 9 Special Edition installation procedure allows you to copy the minimum amount of files necessary onto your hard disk.

___ Note _______________________________________________________________ | | | | | If you have installed The Developer Connection Catalog from the | | original The Developer Connection for OS/2 Volume 9 CD-ROMs on your | | hard disk, you must reinstall it using disc 3 or disc 4 of The | | Developer Connection for OS/2 Volume 9 Special Edition because the | | catalog has been updated in this newer version. | | | | If you had set up The Developer Connection Catalog to run from CD-ROM | | you do not need to reinstall it, since the newer catalog will be read | | from the CD-ROM. In this case, insert disc 3 or disc 4 from The | | Developer Connection for OS/2 Volume 9 Special Edition to browse the | | catalog to have access to the newer version. When doing this, you | | will not see the Special Edition flags on the catalog (as shown in | | Figure 73 in topic 3.4), but you will still have access to all the | | products in the catalog. | | | |________________________________________________________________________|

To install The Developer Connection Catalog you need to do the following steps:

1. Insert disc 3 or disc 4 of The Developer Connection for OS/2 Volume 9 Special Edition into a CD-ROM drive.

2. At an OS/2 command prompt, change to the CD-ROM drive.

3. Type DEVCON and select Enter. The Welcome screen appears as seen in Figure 61.

5. Select OK in the Install panel. You will notice the Update CONFIG.SYS check button is grayed out since no modifications will be made to that file with this installation.

6. Select the The Developer Connection components that you want to install on the system on the screen shown in Figure 63:

You have the following options:

° CATALOG (Run from CD-ROM)

° BROWSER (Run from CD-ROM)

° CATALOG (Run from the hard disk)

° BROWSER (Run from the hard disk)

The option to run The Developer Connection Catalog from the CD-ROM will take less space on your machine (100 KB) but the access will be slower, since only some initialization files will be copied to the hard drive.

The option to run The Developer Connection Catalog from the hard disk will take more space on your machine (2 MB) but will improve the performance of the catalog.

In the example described below, we will use the option to run from the hard disk.

The default options that appear as selected on Figure 63 are the ones to run The Developer Connection Catalog and The Developer Connection Bowser from CD-ROM. To change them to install the catalog on the hard disk, you first have to unselect the two CD-ROM-related lines by clicking on them with mouse button one or by selecting the Deselect all button on the right side of the screen.

Select the line CATALOG (Run from hard disk) with mouse button one.

The Descriptions push button located at the right-hand side of the screen will show a small window with information about the lines selected.

You can also specify the directory where you want to install the components in this panel overtyping the contents of the Base directory field. The default is C:\DEVCON as shown in Figure 63. This directory will be created if it does not exist.

If you have already installed The Developer Connection you will get a different panel with the following choices (as shown in Figure 64):

° Update the currently installed components.

° Delete the installed components and re-install.

° Install additional components.

In both cases, the CD-ROM and the hard disk installation, the result is a new folder called The Developer Connection on your Desktop.

As no modifications of the CONFIG.SYS file were made during the installation, you can start using The Developer Connection components right away.

After opening the folder by double-clicking on The Developer Connection icon, you will see the contents of The Developer Connection folder as shown in Figure 69.

Additionally, as part of The Developer Connection installation described in this section, you may also optionally install The Developer Connection Browser. If you installed The Developer Connection Browser, an additional icon to use it will be included in The Developer Connection folder.
