OS/2 Warp Plug-In Programmer's Toolkit . . .

OS/2 Warp Plug-in Programmer's Toolkit for Netscape Communicator 4.61for OS/2

The OS/2 Warp Plug-in Programmer's Toolkit for Netscape Communicator 4.61 for OS/2 Warp is used for creating your own plug-ins. A Netscape "plug-in" is a generic name for an additional add-on piece of code that can understand and interpret files that Communicator can't handle itself. The plug-in itself can be thought of as glue that bridges the gap between the browser and an existing application. In the OS/2 Plug-in Pack, v3.0 we provide plug-ins to display MPEG and AVI movies, play MIDI music files and play WAV files comprised of digitally sampled sound. These plug-ins take advantage of the platform features of Multimedia in \MMOS2 to enable this extra function. When creating your own plug-in, you typically try to interface to existing code that does extra work for you.

Plug-ins make possible additional function, such as:

  • Create a window in the browser to display information
  • Execute an application
  • Generate data for the browser
  • Enable inter-application communication
  • Override a browser feature and provide another implementation
  • Link to and received data from URLs

The toolkit also supports plug-in development using LiveConnect which provides the interface for communication between plug-ins, Java™, and JavaScript. The Netscape Communicator 4.61 for OS/2 Warp Plug-in Programmer's Toolkit has the sample source code for a new plugin NPSIMPLE.DLL that shows you how to make a LiveConnect plugin using IBM Visualage C++ V3 and IBM Java 1.1 via the Java Native Interface (JNI).

Note: When unzipping the Programmer's Toolkit file, please use the proper flags appropriate to your unzipping program, to maintain the directory structure. For example, the standard UNZIP automatically retains the directory structure by default (that is, no flags are required). However, the current version of PKZIP requires you to specify two flags to unpack and maintain directory structures (that is, PKZIP /extract /directories ).
