The editor displays the file according to the way the parser and the associated load macro are written. You can: Change the special keys, fonts, View, and Actions menus for each file type by customizing load macro. Write your own parser to operate on other types of files. Add your own list of keywords and associated fonts to the parsers that come with the editor. Creating a New Parser To create a parser, you need programming skills, preferably in C. You also need to be familiar with creating external commands. You also need to understand the concepts of lines, fonts, and classes. Fonts In addition to each line containing text (the content of the line), each line may also have a font string set by the parser. The font string, if present, is exactly as long as the text content. Each character in the font string represents the font in which the corresponding text character is displayed. These fonts are mapped to various colors (using the set font command). For example, in the following text and font strings: CONTENT this is an example FONTS AAAAAAAAAAABBBBBBB the A font is set to red, and the B font to green. Therefore, the words this is an appear in red, and the word example appears in green. Classes Each line is a member of one or more classes. The class represents the type of data contained in the line. You can choose to include or exclude specific classes of data from the display. When writing the parser, you have the discretion of choosing the names and numbers of the classes. Tips and Guidelines for Creating a Parser Most of the operation of a parser is simple. The content of a line is scanned. Each item, delimited by certain delimiters particular to the language, is examined and a font string is built up. If a word is found, it may be checked in a look-up table to determine if it is a keyword or a variable name. The code for a Pascal parser is provided as an example in the lxprpas.c file in the LPEX\EXTRAS directory. Writing the Parser in C A parser is an external command that can be executed from the command line or from within macros. Commands for parsers are added to the editor by writing editor extensions using the Applications Programming Interface (API). Because parsers are called quite often, and may have to perform a lot of processing, they are usually written in the C language. Setting Up Live Parsing Live parsing means that the parser monitors and records all changes made to the file as you make them. New data is colored as you add it. For example, when you add a single open comment marker (/*) to a program, the remainder of what you type, and the rest of the program up until a close comment marker (*/), is displayed in the color specified for comments. When you add the close comment marker, only the data from the /* to the */ is displayed as a comment, and the rest of the file is displayed according to its syntax. You can set up a live parser using the set parser Command command, where Command is the command for the parser you have created. For example, the Pascal parser is invoked with the command prpas, so the live parser is set up using the command set parser prpas. Parsing the Pending List As lines are modified, they are placed on a list, called the ═══ 32. 5 ═══ Use the Help window to view the help.
