Building Customized IEAK Packages for UNIX
You can now use the Internet Explorer Customization wizard and Profile Manager to build customized packages and administer Internet Explorer for the UNIX (Solaris 2.5.1 or 2.6) operating system.
You build the packages and run the IEAK from a computer running Internet Explorer 5 and any Windows 32-bit operating system (except Windows NT 3.51).
Some customization features, deployment methods, and maintenance practices differ from the Windows versions of the browser.
Here's some information you should know about building UNIX browser packages:
- The Setup package will consist of one large file instead of a collection of files or a set of floppy disks.
- The Customization wizard and Profile Manager support the corporate administrator role of the IEAK.
Unlike Internet Explorer 32-bit versions of the browser, 16-bit and UNIX versions of the browser do not perform digital signature verification. Programs or cabinet files for these operating systems do not need to be signed.
- The UNIX functionality in the IEAK supports the more common UNIX method of installing the customized product on only a few servers. Users can then run Internet Explorer from this location rather than installing the product locally. This configuration is recommended for UNIX installations. The Windows Update Setup Wizard for Internet Explorer and Other Internet Tools, which downloads .cab files, is not available on the UNIX platform.
- When creating customized browsers for Windows 3.1 and UNIX, you should make sure any channels you include will be displayed correctly on those platforms. The channels will appear in the Explorer bar, which appears in the left part of the browser when the user clicks the Channels button, but they do not appear in a separate channel bar on the desktop.
