Understanding Connection Settings and Management

You can customize and control how users connect to the Internet by using the Internet Explorer Customization wizard and the Connection Manager Administration Kit. There are several ways to do this.

Import connection settings

You can preset users' connection settings by importing your settings on the Connection Settings screen of the wizard. To see which settings you'll import, click the Tools menu, click Internet Options, and then click the Connections tab. Click Settings to view dial-up settings, and click LAN Settings to view network settings. The address for automatic configuration is not imported, however.

Set connection system policies and restrictions

If you are a corporate administrator, you can set system policies and restrictions to determine whether users can change their connection settings. You can set policies and restrictions in Stage 5 of the Internet Explorer Customization wizard or through automatic configuration.

Customize the Connection Manager dialer

To customize the appearance and settings of the Connection Manager, you can use the Connection Manager Administration Kit (CMAK) to create a custom service profile. The Connection Manager consists of the interface that appears and settings that are used when users dial in to the Internet. You can start the CMAK when you are using the Internet Explorer Customization wizard, or you can import an existing service profile.
