Managing the Windows Desktop Update

The Windows Desktop Update makes the desktop and folders look and work more like the Web. Although the Windows Desktop Update is not a part of Internet Explorer 5, you can include it with your IEAK package. If your users have Windows 98, then they already have the desktop features.

If you choose to install the Windows Desktop Update, you can customize its settings later in the wizard, if your build computer is running one of the following configurations:

This can be helpful in setting a corporate standard desktop.

When the Windows Desktop Update is installed, users can browse their computers just as they browse the Web, and they can browse the Web from nearly anywhere on their computer. They will find the Go and Favorites menus everywhere. They can also add "active content," such as a stock ticker, to their desktop, the taskbar, or folders. And they can single-click files to open and run them.

You can also control whether or not users can change these settings, as well as security and proxy settings. You can specify these settings in Stage 5 of the Internet Explorer Customization wizard or by using the IEAK Profile Manager. Then you can control profiles on an ongoing basis by using the automatic configuration feature.
