This product is shareware. It will expire 30 days after it is first used, at which time certain features will be disabled. Use of this software is permitted under the terms and conditions of the license agreement described below.
The Tactile12000 puts a full set of DJ gear on your desktop - it is a 3-D, fully interactive, digital DJ setup - two turntables and a mixer. You can crossfade, backspin, and speed up and slow down music, including MP3 files, on your computer. The first version, the Tactile 1200, was featured in the October 1995 issue of URB magazine, the March 1996 issue of Wired and the May 1996 issue of i-D. This version adds support for loading music from your hard drive, playlist management and automatic mixing, cueing on headphones, keyboard control, and more precise control of the mixer and turntables.
Windows: Pentium PC (200 MHz or faster recommended), Windows 95/98 or NT 4.0 (service pack 3). DirectX 3.0 or later, QuickTime 3.0 or 4.0 required for AIFF and compressed WAV files. For best performance, a quality sound card such as the SoundBlaster is recommended, and make sure you have the latest DirectX drivers for your card.
Macintosh: MacOS 7.5 or newer (OS 8 or newer recommended), PowerPC (G3/G4 or iMac recommended for best performance). QuickTime and Sound Manager extensions required. QuickTime 4.0 required for MP3 playback.
The shareware fee for the Tactile12000 is only $29.95. The downloaded software is fully functional and operates for 30 days. At the end of thirty days, a few key features are disabled although the program still works. The disabled features are headphone cueing, pitch bending, cue points; in addition, your playlist is limited to eight songs at a time.
If you download the software, and you like it, please register it. Your registration fees help us continue to add features and pay various expenses, such as the download server fees. Playing back music:
To load music onto the turntables, press the load button at the bottom. This opens the standard file dialog allowing you to choose a sound file on your computer. A record slides out and you may drag the new track to either turntable. Use the green start button next to the record to start the turntable. Drag the tonearm to around to skip within the track.
To use a track that you have previously loaded, use the arrow buttons next to the track name to show the track you wish to play, then press the Select button to get the record for the track.
Press the playlist button to reorder and delete tracks. Use the autoMix mode to playback tracks in your playlist automatically. The Tactile12000 automatically plays your tracks in order and mixes them together.
Any files you wish to use should be downloaded to your computer ahead of time; the Tactile 12000 uses a lot of CPU power and disk/bus bandwidth, so performance will suffer if you are also downloading music. If your computer and connection are fast enough however, you may be able to download MP3 files as you mix.
The cueing feature plays back the cue channels in the left stereo channel. If the cue feature is turned off, the main output plays back in both stereo channels. Once it is turned on, the main output only plays through the right channel.
It is implemented in this way because most PCs only have a single stereo output. To use the Tactile12000 as a DJ mixing application, you will have to direct only the right channel output to a stereo amplifier and direct the left channel to a pair of headphones. You will probably need special cables for this.
