PAL TV Coders

Record the screen output of your Archimedes Computer on to a video recorder, or display it on a normal TV with video input.

A PAL Coder converts the RGB output from an Acorn Archimedes computer into a form suitable for displaying on a normal TV set or recording onto a video recorder.
While the video recorder is recording, everything that happens on screen will be recorded exactly as it appears on the monitor. Note that the system will not work into a UHF aerial socket, only to a 'SCART' or 'Video' input socket. Most modern TVs and virtually all video recorders have this facility.

The quality of output will not be as good as on the RGB monitor because of the limited resolution of the PAL TV system. Excellent results can be obtained however, when using large anti-aliased text fonts to produce captions for videos etc.

PLC/3 PAL Coder - £104.57 inc vat

The PLC/3 (shown above) is our standard model which works in any of the 'standard TV' modes (eg modes 12 & 15) on all Acorn computer models. It has a 15 pin input socket with a lead supplied to connect it to the computer output. Another 15 pin socket is provided to plug in the computer monitor.

PAL outputs include a BNC for composite video and a four pin S-VHS socket. The S-VHS output will give a noticeably better quality picture if used with a suitable TV or video recorder.

Note that the AKF60 & AKF85 monitors supplied with the RiscPC will not work in modes 12 & 15. However, the PLC/3 will still produce a TV output with the RiscPC even though its RGB monitor will not produce a picture.

Older model Archimedes computers may require adapters for their monitor sockets to convert from the 9 pin output to the later 15 pin socket. An adapter is also available to a monitor with a 9 pin plug. Adapters £4.11 each.

AVK/3 PAL Coder - £355.00 inc vat

The AVK/3 will work with all computer models (including PC and Apple MAC computers). It works in most multisync screen modes although not TV standard modes. Resolutions up to 800 x 600 in 16 million colours are possible.

It has an infra-red remote control with facilities for zooming, freezing & panning the TV picture. Sharpness and picture brightness may also be controlled.

This makes it completely universal for virtually all applications. The zooming feature makes it ideal for lectures and demonstrations etc. as the effective resolution is enhanced to overcome the problems of displaying high resolution screens using the PAL system. If the RGB output can be used to feed the signal to a large screen TV using the SCART input then even better resolution is possible. This is because the signal does not then have to be PAL coded, just the line and field frequencies changed.

The AVK/3 has PAL composite and S-VHS outputs together with RGB & mixed syncs. The unit comes with all connecting cables and can be used with Archimedes computers (including the screens displayed using the PC card), PC computers, and MACs.
