PLEASE NOTE THAT THE W95CHECK.EXE UTILITY ACCOMPANYING THIS README 
FILE IS A BETA VERSION OF THE WINDOWS 95 SYSTEM CHECK.

If you use Windows 3.1, Windows for Workgroups, Windows NT or OS/2:
1) Simply run the program W95CHECK.EXE from your File Manager or
   Program Manager (it does not need to be on your hard drive).
2) Follow the directions presented by the program.

If you use Windows 3.0:
1) Make sure that the file VER.DLL exists in the same directory
   as W95CHECK.EXE (these files do not need to reside on your hard
   drive).
2) Run the program W95CHECK.EXE.
3) Follow the directions presented by the program.

NOTE: If you are already running Windows 95, the System Check will
exit without performing a scan.  For more answers to questions you
may have regarding hardware and software compatibility with
Windows 95, consult the README files that came with your copy of 
Windows 95.  You can also check the documentation that comes with
the Windows 95 Resource Kit for more detailed information.


WHAT IS THE WINDOWS 95 SYSTEM CHECK?

PLEASE NOTE THAT THE W95CHECK.EXE UTILITY ACCOMPANYING THIS README 
FILE IS A BETA VERSION OF THE WINDOWS 95 SYSTEM CHECK.

W95CHECK.EXE is a free utility that will perform a basic test of
hardware and software compatibility for customers considering upgrading
their system to Windows 95.  It is not intended as an all-inclusive
diagnostic check for every known hardware and software compatibility
issue with Windows 95.  Instead, this utility is designed to answer
the most frequently asked technical questions you may have prior to
upgrading to Windows 95.

What the System Check will do
-----------------------------
The Windows 95 System Check will scan a single machine for the 
following:

    Processor       Checks the version of your computer's CPU to
                    determine if it meets the minimum requirement
                    for Windows 95.  Also checks for certain 
                    versions of the 80386 chip that are less than
                    ideal for use with Windows 95.

    Memory (RAM)    Checks the amount of physical memory (RAM) on
                    your computer to determine if it meets the 
                    minimum requirement for Windows 95.

    Disk Space      Checks for free disk space on the hard drive
                    that contains your existing operating system
                    to determine if it meets the minimum (and
                    recommended) requirements for Windows 95.
                    Also checks for swap file and boot drive disk
                    space requirements on hard drives that use
                    disk compression.

    Applications    Scans the top three directory levels of all
                    hard disks installed on your computer for 
                    Windows programs with major known 
                    compatibility issues with Windows 95. Note 
                    that for most of these applications, upgrades
                    are now or will soon be available that are 
                    fully compatible with Windows 95.

                    NOTE: If the System Check does not detect any
                    programs on your computer with known 
                    compatibility issues, the "Your Programs" page
                    of the System Check will be skipped.

What the System Check will NOT do
---------------------------------
The Windows 95 System Check does NOT perform any of the following
checks:

    1) Diagnostic checks for hard disk problems (such as errors 
          that may be found by a utility like ScanDisk)
    2) Hardware detection for peripheral devices (including modems 
          and fax modems)
    3) Analysis or detection of installed network resources, 
          protocols, or network adapters
    4) Virus checks
    5) Application compatibility checks over a shared network 
          resource

In general, the Windows 95 Setup program will provide ample 
warning for most problems associated with upgrading to Windows 95.
(Windows 95 Setup will also perform checks for items 1-3 listed 
above.)
