ClearCase differs from other SCM systems by applying a transparent, non-intrusive approach to configuration management. The ClearCase virtual file system presents versioned objects as standard files and directories. Instead of being constrained by extra restrictions and procedures, developers work as they always have: by using familiar system commands, calls, and tools. In addition, developers take advantage of a unique set of features including:

Version control - ClearCase tracks changes to every file and directory, and supports parallel development by enabling easy branching and merging with the help of a powerful text merge tool. Version and branch labels, along with annotated histories of source changes, help to document the evolution of a project.

Workspace management - ClearCase provides each developer with multiple, consistent, flexible and reproducible file system environments, or "sandboxes." ClearCase "views" allow each developer to select and present the appropriate version of each file and directory for any task, balancing between shared work and protection from destabilizing changes.

Build management - For Ada development, ClearCase for Ada uses AdaMake, which provides dependency analysis, incremental recompilations and binary-sharing within the Ada library system.

Non-Ada users can use ClearMake, a make-compatible tool that provides additional capabilities. It offers binary sharing of objects, analyzes and documents dependencies, and can reliably recreate the structure of any past system build.

Process control - ClearCase can implement project- and site-specific policies and procedures without dictating particular methodologies. Routines can monitor which software modules are being changed by whom, prevent changes by unauthorized personnel, create permanent records of changes, and more. Store Ada libraries under CM - The Ada programming language has several unique features which set it apart from other languages. Because Ada libraries collect binaries and are incrementally updated, conventional "make" tools cannot easily distinguish locations of derived objects, or determine which ones are shareable or obsolete. Also, code dependencies are computed at the binary (or unit) level rather than at the source level. ClearCase for Ada addresses these issues with regard to software configuration management.

Ada-specific builds - Builds are performed using AdaMake, which performs Ada-specific dependency analysis and incremental recompilation. Build scripts (AdaMake invoke files) can be checked into ClearCase to provide build audits of important releases.

Ada source code control - ClearCase for Ada applies the full power of ClearCase to source code control. It also assists in managing Ada libraries as versioned objects. This allows developers to select views of specific versions of a library and to work in parallel without interfering with one another. Baselining is enhanced, as both source code and libraries can be assigned a common label to identify a bug fix, milestone or release.

Clear visual presentation - ClearCase for Ada also provides visual integration. Special menu selections in the ClearCase graphical user interface allow a variety of Ada specific operations to be performed. Ada file types, such as source code, libraries and families, are represented by their own icons for accuracy and clarity.
