Sys: is a logical device name, and is not fixed to any drive. i.e. it follows
whichever drive you have booted from.

No, device names are, fro example, df0:, ram:, cd0:, etc. Volume names are
empty: ram disk:

You're correct, workbench will not allow you to use a colon when naming drives,
but it is required to access the drive. The colons were there to clarify I was
referring to disks

Anything which messes up because somebody decided to call their device name hd0:
instead of dh0: has been very badly implemented. these names are entirely
user-defineable, and shouldn't be relied on.

Nothing to stop you giving the device name dh0: a volume name of work:
