PNGs would be more appropriate if you are coming from Photogenics.

You would use the Alpha layer to set the transparency. I don't know
whether any browsers actually support 8-bit transparency in PNGs yet,
but you can always make the Alpha contrasty.

Art Effect also allows you to save a PNG with alpha channel.
