I had this problem, as you say _extremely_ annoying. I have a Squirrel too.
I think the problem is basically that read errors cause the Squirrel to
lock out anything else 'til a good read occurs, which you knew anyway 8-)
. On my system it occurred with WB (3.0->3.9), hardly ever CLI etc., and
different filesystems helped but didn't stop lockups.

I got a massive improvement when I stopped using the Squirrel CD32 emulator
(i.e. cd.device). I removed cd.device and cddevice_config (sp?) from DEVS:
and re-routed access through squirrelscsi.device. I had to actually remove
the above as their presence allowed some access via cd.device.

I used the Squirrel Install to create a CD32 boot floppy for games.

Having said that, the problem may be that your CD drive is just getting
old/very fussy about fingerprints etc. like mine, as my friend's mechanism
works much better.

Hope this helps, if anyone's got other ideas I'd be interested too as it
still occurs for me infrequently even now.
