We had IDEFix97 fitted when we first bought this machine. We had hard-drive
problems galore from day one. IDEFix97 was only driving a 4.3G hard-drive
and 8xCDRom, working under Os3.1. We had crashes, non-validations, NDos
partitions, leading to eventually just the insert floppy animation.
We had more head-aches in the first month to convince us that we probably
would be better off junking the whole lot!
IDEFix 97, we were told, is no longer supported. (Anyone correct me if I'm
wrong here, please). Eventually, when we got to the animation floppy
screen only, we thought we had a crispy hard-drive. Then we had nothing -
black screen - dead machine. On futher examination, we discovered that the
IDEFix board had burnt out, taking the 3.1 roms with it! We purchased
another set of 3.1 roms and EIDE99. This is a much better board which
can't move and short out, which is what the problem was thought to be.
Check all cabling and connections - paying careful attention to the
IDEFix97 board (a magnifying glass may help). What you are looking for is
a blackened pin or a smoky trace somewhere on the board. Look very
carefully indeed.
Your best bet is to replace the IDEFix board - go for a Flyer if you wish.
You will gain extra speed which is a bonus, and can rest easy, particularly
with such a large hard-drive.
Our drive turned out to be fine BTW.

In your mail, you state you have only recently purchased this hard-drive -
what were you using before - any problems with it?

Just some food for thought.

We get two re-boots on a cold start now, but it's worth the extra peace of
mind.

Where did you store your data previous to installing onto the 40G drive?
