WISR '95 "Closest to the Pin" Tournament Results

The "Closest to the Pin" contest was a qualified success. As advertised, attendees mingled with their fellow colleagues over cocktails and a friendly game of "Closest to the Pin" outside the Social Centre. Those who dared received their three golf balls to hit to the Centre's sole golf hole.

The object of the game was to get the ball closest to the pin, and the prize was an Andersen teeshirt! The actual contest was a nailbiter, with Kevin Benner of Andersen taking the early lead, coming within about 50 feet from the pin. Just when everyone thought that Andersen would walk off with its own teeshirt, David Eichmann of the University of Houston-Clear Lake managed to get the ball within 40 feet of the pin. He attempted to explain this as beginners luck, but none of the attendees quite believed him.

The contest was not without some unusual play by some of the contestants. W. (Voytek) Kozaczynski nearly took out an Andersen Center window with a vicious slice to the right. Larry Latour seemed at first to look terrible, but was advised by Martin Griss that the error in his swing was repeatable, after which he hit three reasonable balls to the same place (into the "drink", but the same place). All agreed that in this case the scientific method indeed had a place in competitive sports.

Throughout the contest the open bar serving beer, wine and pop (the midwestern term for soda) was set up outside for all to enjoy watching their colleagues smack golf balls, and truly enjoy the fine weather! As advertised, participants couldn't wait to continue to socialize in the Social Centre after the competition.
