Kermit 95 (K-95 for short) is a full-featured,
fully native, 32-bit communications software package for Microsoft
Windows® 95, Windows 98, Windows ME,
Windows NT (3.51 and 4.0), Windows XP, Windows 2000, and
IBM OS/2 (3.0 and later) from the Kermit
Project at Columbia University, offering:
What sets Kermit 95 apart from other PC communication packages?
- The Kermit Project supplies the software for both ends of the
connection: Kermit 95 for your PC and the file-transfer or client/server
partner for
UNIX, VMS, VOS, IBM Mainframes, DOS, and lots of other
platforms. No interoperability problems and no finger pointing. The
new K95 1.1.20 package includes the
C-Kermit 7.0 CDROM.
- Kermit Project software includes the definitive, up-to-date,
full-featured, high-performance Kermit file-transfer
protocol implementation.
- A powerful and uniform command and scripting
language across hundreds of platforms and all connection methods,
allowing you to automate any communication task in a transportable
manner.
- A large repertoire of
international character-set translations:
more than 80 character sets available for terminal emulation and
over 50 for file transfer. Now including
Unicode.

- Unlike other packages that "know what's best" for you,
Kermit 95 lets you control and customize your communications
environment, terminal emulation, screen appearance, keyboard, mouse, modem,
dialing rules, Telnet and authentication policies, file-transfer protocol, and
every other aspect of its operation.
- We stand behind our products and support them 100%.

- Windows 95 on Intel x86 and compatible PC platforms
- Windows 98 on Intel x86 and compatible PC platforms
- Windows ME on Intel x86 and compatible PC platforms
- Windows XP on Intel x86 and compatible PC platforms

- OS/2 3.0 (Warp), and 4.0 (Merlin) on Intel x86 PC platforms
Note: As of Kermit 95 version 1.1.16, the Windows NT PowerPC edition
has been discontinued, since Windows NT itself has been discontinued for the
PowerPC. The Alpha/NT version is frozen as of 1.1.20, since Alpha/NT was
discontinued by Compaq and Microsoft. An IA64 version of Kermit 95 for
Windows XP is not yet available. Kermit 95 is not available for Windows CE.
Kermit 95 works uniformly
over a variety of connection methods:
- SECURE INTERNET CONNECTIONS via:
- Modem dial-out and dial-in (modem and/or serial port required)
- Direct serial connections (serial port required)
- Internet: TCP/IP TELNET (incoming too!) (TCP/IP stack required)
- Internet: TCP/IP RLOGIN (TCP/IP stack required)
- DECnet and/or LAT:
- TES32 (Windows only): (InterConnections Inc
TES32 required, which is no longer a product)
- NETBIOS (OS/2 only)
- IBM OS/2 Named Pipes (OS/2 only)
- IBM OS/2 Warp Server Redirected Communication Ports (OS/2 only)
Note: certain of the 3rd-party products listed above have been
discontinued: SuperLAT, TES32, and perhaps PATHWORKS on certain platforms,
but K95 1.1.20 still supports them.
Kermit 95 includes a graphical Dialer (menus,
buttons, dialog boxes, notebooks, and all) to configure and launch
all your connections without complicated initialization files, macro
definitions, or commands of any kind. The Kermit engine itself is
launched from the Dialer pushbutton-style to make each of your connections
automatically with all the appropriate settings.
In addition to the graphical Dialer,
Kermit 95 offers a console-mode command-line interface, similar to its cousins
on UNIX, VMS, and MS-DOS (more about this in the
Kermit 95 FAQ). The graphical Dialer, however, removes the need to
interact directly with the command prompt in most cases. Yet all the commands
are there in case you need them . . . or if you want to script them.
Kermit 95 is a multithreaded, 32-bit, protected-mode, preemptive
multitasking serial and network communication software application that
is fast, yet easy on your CPU. The Windows version is a fully native 32-bit
Windows program; the OS/2 version is a fully native 32-bit OS/2 program.
Kermit 95 offers:
Special features in the OS/2 version include:
- A REXX programming interface
- SLIP and PPP dialing
- SOCKS4 interface
- Named Pipes and NETBIOS peer-to-peer LAN connections
- Transmission of files with all Extended Attributes
Version 1.1.20 was released 31 March 2000.
The shrink-wrapped package,
published by Manning Publications
of Greenwich CT, includes the Windows 95/98/ME/XP/NT/2000 and OS/2 versions of
Kermit 95 for all supported platforms and the Kermit 95 manual on
CDROM, plus the C-Kermit 7.0 CDROM and
the Second Edition of Using
C-Kermit in PDF format.
