THE CRYNWR PACKET DRIVER COLLECTION Packet drivers are small interface programs between IBM PC (and compatible) network hardware and PC applications programs. They are similar to device drivers, but with two important differences: 1. They present a standardized interface to the application, independent of the particular network board. 2. They can be used by more than one application at once. The packet driver specification was developed and made public by FTP Software Inc, and the effort to develop and distribute free (but copyright) packet driver software is led by Russ Nelson, formerly of Clarkson University, now of Crynwr Software. Packet driver software and documentation may be ftp'd from Columbia University host kermit.columbia.edu, directory packet-drivers and its subdirectories. If you don't have ftp access to Columbia University, you may order packet drivers on diskette by postal mail -- request a catalog and order form from kermit@columbia.edu or call +1 212 854-3703, or fax +1 212 663-8202, or write to: Kermit Distribution Columbia University 612 West 115th Street New York NY 10025-7721 USA The Columbia University packet driver distribution area is organized into subdirectories as follows: bin Individual binaries from current Crynwr packet driver collection. doc General documentation files. new New contributions, not yet added to the Crynwr distribution. src Source code + documentation for individual packet drivers. zip The Crynwr packet driver collection in .ZIP format. The zip directory contains the latest packet driver releases and related items. The Crynwr packet driver collection is furnished by Russ Nelson. Columbia expresses its thanks to Russ on behalf of the world's packet-driver users for this valuable collection of software. NOTE: Packet drivers are also available from network adapter vendors such as Cabletron. These drivers cannot be distributed publicly. Contact your vendor or your network manager for further information. DISCLAIMER: Columbia University is supplying these files as a convenience. No support or development of packet drivers by Columbia University is expressed or implied.
