For the first time in mankind’s history glassmaking became noteworthy in ancient Egypt. The Egyptians had a very different view of glass than people in later ages — to them glass objects were jewellery comparable to gems. Although Egyptian glassmakers did not know the technique of glassblowing, over 3000-year-old glasshouses discovered in Tell-el-Amarma tell us about their high level of technical and artistic skill. The most popular glass objects in Egypt were small perfume bottles and flasks used for balm.
