People began using carafes for serving drinks in Northern and Western Europe at the end of the 16th century. The popularity of carafes increased when table manners became more refined with Renaissance. Carafes were made both of Waldglas and façon de Venise soda glass. In the homes of North European burghers, flagons with handles, as well as long-necked and wide-mouthed bottles, were used as tableware very rarely. Jugs made of ceramics, wood or pewter were used instead.
