  • 30-11-96 - Internationally acclaimed pop singer Bj÷rk Gudmundsdottir says she is "extremely pleased" to win the 1997 Nordic Council's Music Award.

The award, worth DKR350,000, will be presented to the singer on March 3 next year in Oslo, Norway with Bj÷rk intending to make the occasion a family affair.

"The presentation will be on my grandmother's birthday and we are thinking about going together to receive it," she told a reporter from the daily Morgunbladid. "I am such a punk that I have immunised myself against receiving awards and don't usually take any notice of them" adding that the fact that it is her grandmother's birthday is first and foremost of more pleasing significance to her. "I hope that I don't sound ungrateful but I am always on the defensive when I receive awards. I think that people should not get awards until they are old and tired and they have done all that they can, given everything of themselves, and I am just beginning."

According to a statement issued by the awards committee the accolade acknodwledges Bj÷rk's development of her own style while staying true to her ideals.

The judge's statement also says that she has developed her art over many years to maximum success while her popularity throughout the world is due to her huge musical talent.
