E-MAIL Call!

What can scientists learn about whales from their ear wax? How long can sea birds stay away from land? Find out the answers to these and other interesting questions by joining the fun of Mail Call from the BALDRIGE.

The sixth grade students of the Voyager Team at Discovery Middle School, Orlando, Florida, sent a list of questions to the captain, scientists, and crew of the NOAA research ship the Malcolm Baldrige. The questions, ranging from whale habits to sea sickness, emerged from an interdisciplinary study of whales, navigation, sailing, and survival.

As I read the fascinating answers, more questions came to my mind. If you are fascinated by marine life, concerned about our environment, or interested in a career at sea, you can contact Captain Craig Nelson at his e-mail address: CSNelson@rdc.noaa.gov

P.S. If you want to know more about seabirds, be sure to read a real Seabird Observer's findings. Michael Force describes the beautiful birds he finds at sea.

Mail from the MALCOLM BALDRIGE

Dear Kris,

We were so pleased to see all of your students' questions about whales and seabirds (and life at sea). They are very good questions -- please tell your students that we appreciate their imagination and interest. We enjoyed putting the answers together.

It has taken some time for us to get to all of the questions, so please pass our apologies on to your students. We are having a very successful cruise so far -- seeing lots of dolphins and whales and so our days have been full.

Sincerely,
Lisa Ballance and Bob Pitman
