KIDS On The Moon : Wk.4: Space Nutrition

Howdy, and Welcome to the Moon Kids Nutrition Center!

As we discovered in the Biosphere 2 habitat and NASA's Skylab and Shuttle flight experiments, balanced and nutrious meals are important to any *"closed-loop" life support system. (* That's NASA jargon for creating a space station or habitat with all basic necessities independently of Earth.)

Hmmm.... Guess What? We're trying out different plants and fish

for our Lunar Greenhouse!

Would you like to choose which nutritious foods for the Greenhouse on the International Lunar Colony?

Week 4: Nutrition Sugar Test and Quiz

*Caution: Don't Try This At School! The Sugar test can be tried at home
just before supper (If your parents give you permission):

  • First, push on another's person's hands a little to feel
    your own strength.

  • Then eat 1 teaspoon of pure sugar (with your parent's
    permission, of course).

  • Within 10 seconds, try to push again on the same person's
hands, and see if you can feel a significant drop in strength.

  • (I tried this using the reflex test before and after,
but I detected an increase of reflex rather than a drop.) (Perhaps you can push a postage weight machine before and after for a measureable difference.)
*Too much sugar in your system should provide FALSE energy, and a drop of strength.(We recommend doing this just before dinner,
so that eating regular nutritious food right after
the sugar will bring your metabolism back to normal!)
  • If you try this, please send us your results soon! Just send e-mail to: dmollica@pilot.njin.net
