Welcome to Wageningen Agricultural University WEB-pages about International Education. In these pages you'll find information about the international thesis-oriented MSc programmes leading to the title of Master of Science.
In this page:
The MSc programmes start every year in September and require a minimum of 17 months for completion. The language of instruction is English. Each programme comprises 61 credits. Credits are measured in terms of the hours of work involved: one credit is equivalent to a workload of 40 hours.
The core of the programme is the Thesis research (27 credits) which is selected and arranged in close consultation with a senior staff member of Wageningen Agricultural University and involves a research activity concluded with a thesis. Whenever possible, thesis research should be on a topic related to the student's work in their home country, where part of the research work may be done if the necessary facilities and technical guidance are available. Thesis topics are proposed by the students, but must take account of the current research in the Wageningen department(s) involved. The proposed thesis and the graduate courses selected must be approved by the Programme Committee of the appropriate programme.
Preceding the Thesis research, a selection of graduate courses consisting of compulsory and optional lectures, practical exercises, assignments and excursions will be compiled for each individual student, bearing in mind the requirements of the thesis research. In this part of the programme the course elements fall into two general categories: Methodology (13 credits) and Subject Matter (21 credits).
- Methodology, involving subjects such as: computer science; literature retrieval and report writing; methods, design and analysis of experimental work; preparation, implementation and evaluation of projects. If necessary, a limited number of courses in basic subjects of relevant disciplines may be selected.
- Subject Matter, comprising courses pertinent to the thesis topic. Furthermore, and time permitting, a number of other advanced courses may be selected to broaden the student's scientific horizon.
The MSc degree is awarded by the University Council upon completion of the thesis. Outstanding students will be awarded the degree with distinction. Candidates who choose to terminate their studies after completion of the course work (Methodology and Subject Matter), will be awarded a certificate. Graduates of the MSc programmes may proceed to a doctorate if supervision and funding are guaranteed.
