The Quarter in Review, January 1996

In the past three months, Prince Edward Island has had several economic successes, introduced significant programs to the community, and made notable strides in the area of economic development. This has resulted in an exciting and productive quarter.

In November 1995, Prince Edward Island enjoyed the lowest unemployment rate since November 1988. In December 1995 - for the first time in six fiscal years - the number of welfare recipients on PEI has decreased. All of this can be directly attributed to the high rate of economic growth that has created over 8,000 new jobs on PEI since 1993.

Prince Edward Island's agriculture industry is flourishing, indicated by a report from Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada. Total farm cash receipts have increased 5.5 percent hitting a new all-time record high in 1995.

The Red-Tape Review, announced at the end of November, is now well underway. The provincial government has identified a means of helping small businesses compete more effectively, by eliminating many of the expenses and impediments Island businesses face getting products to market.

In early December, following on the heels of an announcement last fall, a Premier's Action Committee was appointed to implement the Family Violence Prevention Strategy, as well, a new HIV/AIDS strategy was announced the first of December. These details and many more can be found within this edition of "The Quarter in Review."

This publication has been prepared to inform Islanders about the activities of government, the highlights of the past three months and to present new and timely issues. I invite you to contact myself, your elected member or any other government department with any questions you may have.
