The Group has particular interests in the processes of innovation and technical change in the construction industry, and the provision of technical support to designers. Research tasks have included devising new ways to promote the transfer of information from the solar research community to the building design and construction professions throughout Europe, and assisting the introduction of energy-conscious architecture into the mainstream of architectural design, as well as developing a number of new tools and techniques in support of building designers and constructors, and third level teachers. In the JOULE Programme, ERG coordinates SOLINFO and INNOBUILD, and participates in COMBINE 2, Advanced Windows Information System (WIS), and 'Daylight Europe'. Also, ERG is now active in the distribution of Design Tools and Software resulting from European Commission research programmes.
ERG is a member of the THERMIE Programme OPET Network. It has organised a series of seminars on Bioclimatic Architecture in every EU Member State, and also intensive, post-graduate short training courses for architects and engineers from many European and North African countries. ERG has prepared publications and videos, and the Group was responsible for evaluating building sector projects as well as many projects in industry in assessments of the THERMIE Programmme.
Much of the work of ERG is undertaken in conjunction with an extensive network of architects, engineers and physicists in every Member State, and in cooperation with professional institutes, universities and the architectural and technical press throughout the EU.
In Ireland, ERG undertakes consultancy and other energy-related tasks for public and private sector clients, including advising on low energy building design and construction, energy modelling and performance evaluation, the environmental assessment of buildings, and assessing competitive design proposals.
ERG is always interested in communicating with other groups around the world active in the fields of bioclimatic architecture, passive solar building design, the indoor environment and low environmental impact building materials. We also maintain a page with links to groups with similar or relevant interests.
