Mountain View, Calif. (February 6, 1995) -- Silicon Graphics, Inc. (NYSE: SGI)
announced today that it has been selected by the European Union to participate in a
technology ~xhibition to be held in conjunction with the G7 Ministerial conference on the
iformation Society, February 24- 26, 1995. The exhibition will focus on the benefits, opportunities
and implications of the infomation revolution that is proliferating throughout the world.
Silicon Graphics will be part of a group of companies representing the United States during
the Information Society Exhibition taking place in the Espace Leopold European
Community Parliament building. Edward R. McCracken, Silicon Graphics, Inc. chairman and CEO
and co-chair of the NIIAC, will be one of 12 U.S. business leaders participating in a round table session held
in conjunction with the G7 ministerial meetings. The. company will be demonstrating an interactive consumer
application and a global collaborarive business application that uses computarional, graphical and telecommunications
technologies. "The development of the global information infrastructure is one of the most important endeavors of the
next millennium," said McCracken. "As global citizens, we must ensure that the information society benefits every man,
woman and child in his or her pursuit of lifelong learning, high-quality health care, and personal and public safety."
During the July 1994 Naples G-7 summit meeting, President Clinton proposed, and his proposal was accepted, that
a separate G-7 meeting be convened to focus specifically on the issues surrounding the global information infrastructure
(GII). The G-7 Ministerial conference will concenwate on the development of the information society, open regulatory and
competition policies, access to the information infrastructure and applications as well as the social and cultural aspects of the GII.
Ed McCracken, along with National Public Radio President and CEO Delano Lewis, chairs the National Information Infrastructure Advisory Council (NIIAC). The NIIAC was founded in January, 1994 by the Clinton Administration to provide guidance to Department of Commerce Secretary Ronald Brown and the Interagency Infrasmtructure Task Force (IITF) on the development of the national information infrastructure (NII). The council is a 37-member advisory panel composed of individuals representing state and local governments, private industry, public interest, community, labor, and leading experts in related fields.
