X-15 OPERATIONS FLIGHT REPORT

FLIGHT NO: 3-64-95 DATE OF REPORT: 10-23-67

PILOT: Maj. W. Knight DATE OF FLIGHT: 10-17-67

CARRIER AIRCRAFT: B-52 #008 LAUNCH LAKE: Smith Ranch

ENGINE NO: S/N 103 APU #1 19AN APU #2 25AN

PURPOSE OF FLIGHT: 1. Ames Boost Guidance (29)

2. Solar Spectrum Measurement (29)

3. Ultraviolet Plume (3c)

4. Micrometeorite Collector (13)

5. Tip Pod Camera (42a)

I. Discussion of Previous Operations A. On flight 3-63, the micrometeorite package failed to retract properly and re-entry was accomplished with the package partially extended. This resulted in heat damage to the test package and the package carrier. The experiment was removed and sent to NAA for repair. On flight 3-64, the extension retraction worked properly, but only four faces were exposed. The unit was returned to NAA. II. Configuration Changes A. The radio antenna lead was shortened by rerouting, and an extra connector removed.

B. The external power relay was changed due to voltage fluctuation operating under hangar power.

C. The fuel selector valve was changed for internal leakage in the emergency jettison portion of the valve.

D. The pilot's O2 low warning lite pressure switch was changed. The pressure setting had changed to a lower value.

III. Preflight Events A. APU-BCS runs were accomplished on 13 October.

B. The aircraft was mated to B-52 #008 on 16 October.

IV. Flight Events A. Servicing was accomplished on 17 October with no problems. A slight delay occurred just prior to engine start to allow the uprange helicopter to get into position.

B. No aircraft problems occurred during flight 3-64 on 17 October. The micrometeorite experiment only exposed four of the six faces. The third skid was not armed and did not deploy.
