X-15 FLIGHT REQUEST

Flight No. 1-22-37 Scheduled Date of Flight: 7-14-61

Pilot: Cmdr. Forrest S. Petersen

Subject of Test: Initial flight of X-15 #670 with XLR99 engine; systems and subsystems evaluation; pilot familiarization; evaluation of b control technique.

Airplane Configuration: Basic X-15 with XLR99 engine; nonlinear aileron gearing..

Launch: Silver Lake on magnetic heading of 240°. SAS 8-6-8.

No. Time Alt V a  Event

1. *0 45 790 - Launch using center stick, light engine at 50%T, rotate to 10°a.

2. 12 43 1100 12° When supersonic increase a to 12° and maintain until q = 30°.

3. 58 67 1700 Maintain 30° q, pushover to zero g at 58 sec.

4. 90 75 2800 After coming level, rotate to 1g, perform rudder and aileron pulse.

5. 115 75 3700 Shutdown engine at 115 sec., extend speed brakes, set SAS 8-0-0, Attempt b control technique at varying angle of attack.

6. 180 75 2200   **Reset SAS 8-6-8, dj = 0.

7. 250 55 1500 10° Initiate space-positioning turn with » 90° bank angle to check antenna selector switch.

8. Continue space-positioning turn to high key.

9. Check ventral armed, pressurize tanks below 17K obtain calibrate.

10. **SAS 6-6-8, 300 knot landing approach, jettison ventral three miles from touchdown, flaps and gear down - intended touchdown is two-mile marker.

11. Before APU shutdown, cycle controls, retract flaps, set stabilizer trim to zero, and push-to-test ball nose -- DATA OFF..

* Time starts with onset of chamber pressure.

** Ground control call-out items if not reported by pilot.

NOTES: 1. Duration of flight approximately 10 min.

2. Emergency lakes -- Three Sisters and Cuddeback.

Ground Rules Not Covered in Operating Manual for "No Launch":

1. Malfunction of roll channel.

2. Malfunction of inertial platform attitude, d, f, y.

3. Malfunction of hot nose.

ALTERNATE SITUATIONS:

1. If engine fails to light after two attempts, jettison propellants and land at Silver Lake.

2. If radar or radio become inoperative, proceed as planned.

3. If ball nose fails fly 2.0g until d = 30°; proceed as planned. Fly 1.0g after shutdown, do not evaluate b technique.

4. If an engine relight is necessary, add 5 seconds to pushover time.
