X-15 FLIGHT REQUEST

Flight No. 1-12-21 Date of Request 8/26/60

Scheduled Date of Flight 8/30/60

Subject of Test: Stability, control, and performance research.

Airplane Configuration: Basic X-15 with two XLR-11 engines.

Launch: M = 0.82, Hp = 45,000 ft., SAS 4-4-8 at Silver Lake on magnetic heading of 248°.

 No. Time  Alt   a Event
1. 45 0.82   -- Launch, 8/8 thrust, 8° a climb, Vi min = 280 knots.

2. 40 1.2   SAS 4-2-2, rudder pulse - - SAS 4, 4, 8.

3. 42 1.2   Disengage YAR damper.

4. 70 2.1   Re-engage YAR damper.

5. 75 2.2   Push-over to 1/2 g and maintain.

6. 78 2.4   SAS 0-4-8, pitch pulse.

7. 80 2.9   SAS 0-4-8, pitch pulse - SAS 4-4-8.

8. 78 3.2   12° Pull-up to 12° a until burnout.

9. 78 3.1   12° After burnout, SAS 4-2-2, rudder pulse.

10. 79 2.9   Push-over to zero g, hold until descending.

11. 78 2.6   14° Pull-up to 14° a, rudder pulse.

12. 73 2.4   -- Push-over to zero g, then initiate 15° a left turn.

14. 60 1.7   -- SAS 4-4-8, cycle speed brakes.

15. -- -- -- -- Perform 0-4-8 pitch pulses to M » 0.6.

16. SAS 4-4-8, vector to high key, jettison propellants.

17. Check ventral arm, pressurize tanks.

18. Landing: SAS 4-4-8, 300 knots approach, jettison ventral, flaps and gear down.

19. Immediately after touchdown, apply full rudder (direction as necessary for wind conditions). After approximately 6 seconds, apply full aileron control with the rudder.

20 Before APU shutdown, cycle controls, retract flaps and set stabilizer trim to zero - data off.

Notes:

1. Duration of flight » 10 minutes.

2. Requirements for emergency lake sites remain the same (Silver, 3 Sisters, and Cuddeback).

3. Pilot will call inertial altitude and pressure Mach number at 10,000 foot increments up to 70,000 feet.

Alternate Situations:

1. Pitch or roll SAS malfunction before launch will constitute an abort.

2. If YAW SAS malfunctions before launch proceed with original flight plan except for items 8 and 9. The pull-up and rudder pulse will be made at 8° a.

3. SAS failure after launch - Proceed to "Edwards Area" and reduce thrust to maintain M < 2.0.

4. With 6 or less chambers burning, position for landing at Silver Lake.

5. With 7 chambers burning proceed with original flight plan to M = 2.8 at Hp » 70K. Reduce to 5/8 thrust and maintain altitude until burnout, then resume original flight plan.
