Box Top for Education-each box top is worth 10 cents each and the schools get cash for them.  For example:  Total 2008 Box Top Earnings (Kindergarten, Nelson-Wilks-Herron, Guy Berry, Pinkston combined):  $7,808  However, each school is eligible up to $20,000 per year (4 schools x $20,000/each=$80,000 in potential cash for our school district); therefore, we can still benefit a lot more from this program if we get the word out and get more box tops donated!  Website for additional information and list of the participating Box Top products:  www.boxtops4education.com

Campbell's Labels-these labels are collected at all the schools and the points earned go towards free merchandise from their catalog.  In the Mtn. Home School district this program directly benefits children in the special education department.  We can redeem points towards classroom materials, DVDs, videos, computers and even for a mini-van!  The labels never expire and it appears there is no limit to the amount of labels you can submit!  Website for additional information and list of participating products:  www.labelsforeducation.com

Soda can tabs-children at Nelson-Wilks-Herron collect the tabs off aluminum cans and then donated them to the Children's Hospital in Springfield, MO or Little Rock, AR. The collection of these tabs goes towards helping families of sick children who are staying at the Ronald McDonald House.  The school itself doesn't directly benefit from this program; however, there have been numerous children from this area that have been treated at these two hospitals.

Recycling of empty ink cartridges-Guy Berry collects empty ink cartridges and earns money for their recycling efforts.  They receive approximately $45-$50 for a large box of printer/ink cartridges that they submit.  Currently, they bring in approximately $200 a year with this program.

Aluminum cans-are collected by some students at the Jr. High to earn money for various programs at the school and the High School Bomber Band also collects them to fund band trips and etc.  Collection site for aluminum cans for the Bomber Band is located at Harp's.

The Partners in Education (P.I.E.) volunteers oversee most of the above programs and donate many hours towards promoting, collecting and submitting these items on behalf of our schools. These programs are not only great ways to make money for our schools; some of them are also encouraging and teaching our students to care for the environment by recycling.

If you wish to inquire about volunteer opportunities for any of these programs, please contact one of the Mtn. Home Public schools.

Information about the P.I.E program:

P.I.E. (Partners in Education) volunteers work in close cooperation with principals, teachers, and the community in general:

1. To make public education more effective for the pupils, the schools, and the community.

2. To assist the professional staff in their responsibilities of giving needed service to students.

3. To enrich the experience of pupils beyond what is available in school.

4. To build better understanding of schools and their programs among citizens, and to stimulate widespread support for public education.

Mountain Home Partners in Education (PIE) was founded in 1986 to provide assistance to teachers and other staff members of the Mountain Home School District by promoting school volunteerism within the district.  PIE's motto "Helping Teachers Help Kids" is really what the program is all about.  Our aim is to recruit, train and place volunteers who can provide services deemed appropriate by professional staff in order to maximize effectiveness of the district's educational programs.  PIE's volunteer program serves as a link between the district and the community and provides patrons and citizens an opportunity to be significantly involved in the education of youngsters.  PIE strongly believes that those who experience our schools firsthand come to share our conviction that Mountain Home schools provide quality comprehensive education for students.

Volunteer services are varied and broad.  The kind of service depends upon the individual school's or teacher's needs as well as the volunteer's interests and abilities.  During the 2006-2007 school year volunteers donated over 27,000 hours.  Total hours donated so far for the 2008-2009 school year:  13, 614 hours.  General areas for volunteer assistance include:  tutoring individuals or small groups in academic subjects; general classroom assistance; library, office, nurse, and playground assistance; making instructional games; assisting with art, music, science, home economics special projects; mentoring; special education for the gifted or those with learning challenges; helping with special activities; chaperoning field trips; enriching the curriculum as a resource volunteer.
