Biographical Information

Roger  Kennedy was appointed Director of the National Park Service
(NPS) by Presient Clinton on May 13, 1993.  As Director of the NPS
he oversees an operation of a system of 367 national park units
with a budget of 1.5 billion and almost 20,000 employees. 
Kennedy's emphasis in directing the NPS, have included educational
initiatives and NPS organizational streamlining.       

Kennedy was past director of the National Museum of American
History in Washington, D.C., in 1979.  The author of numerous books
and articles, he was editorial director for the Smithsonian Guide
to Historic America and Rediscovering America.  During the past
three years he has hosted several television series, including
Roger Kennedy's Rediscovering America; Smithsonian Presents;
Invention, and the Prize  During the 1950s, Kennedy was a
Washington correspondent and producer for NBC and has  his own two-
hour radio show on that network.

He was a vice president for the Ford Foundation, 1970-1979.

During the 1950s, Kennedy served at various times as an attorney in
the Department of Justice, as special assistant to the Secretary of
Health, Education and Welfare, and as special assistant to the
Secretary of Labor.  From 1959 to 1968, he was an official at
Northwestern National Bank in his hometown of St. Paul, Minnesota.

Kennedy, who served in the U.S. Navy during World War II, earned a
bachelors degree from Yale in 1949 and law degree from the
University of Minnesota in 1952.
