NBS Programs - Research

NBS Research provides timely and objective science that applies to priority resource issues of the Department of the Interior and the Nation. The products of research help to ensure that difficult issues are resolved optimally, on the basis of sound scientific knowledge.

Program Components
Divisions of Species Biology, Population Dynamics and Ecosystem
Research
Mission
The primary responsibilities are to continue existing research programs and develop new research, while evaluating NBS research in meeting Departmental needs. On the basis of detailed knowledge of biological resources and NBS capabilities, staff identifies priority research needs, and proposes partnerships and allocations of resources to address issues effectively.

Division of Cooperative Research
Mission
The network of about 60 NBS Cooperative Research Units provides:
* opportunities for graduate education in specialized areas,
* research on resource management issues, and
* access to the scientific resources at cooperating
universities.

Representing the combined efforts of Federal, State and university partnership, the Cooperative Research Units are the basis of the most substantial NBS partnerships. This unique cooperative foundation has supported in past successes, such as the development of the Gap Analysis Program.

Components
Current efforts will unify the structure and focus of Cooperative Units formerly attached to different bureaus (e.g., Fish and Wildlife Service, National Park Service, and Bureau of Land Management) and to develop two prototype NBS Cooperative Units able to address cross-bureau needs more comprehensively.
