CENSUS RADIO BROADCAST SERVICE Edition #151--For Air Beginning Week of March 13, 1995 Americans Love a Bargain, Runs 1:21 ROZZELL: Think you've been seeing more of those warehouse clubs with everything from tires to diapers on sale? Well, the Census Bureau's Faye Dorsett tells us it's not our imagination. DORSETT: From 1987 to 1992, there was an increase of 119 percent in establishments. It went from 281 in 1987, to 616 establishments in 1992, or an increase of 335 establishments. ROZZELL: And this growth isn't just in the number of stores. DORSETT: Across the U.S. in 1992, there were 30.7 billion dollars in sales for warehouse clubs. ROZZELL: And America's hunt for bargains has also helped to boost the job market. DORSETT: There was a 179 percent increase in employment, and the counts went from 32,426 to 90,457 employees from '87 to '92. ROZZELL: This high growth rate for warehouse club jobs is a big factor in the retail arena. DORSETT: The increase in employment in warehouse clubs is a large chunk of the increase in employment in the retail sector over all. ROZZELL: And Dorsett notes almost one of every ten new retail jobs in the five-year period was in warehouse clubs. This is Liane Rozzell reporting.
