Martha Farnsworth Riche

Director, U.S. Bureau of the Census




Martha Farnsworth Riche was sworn in as the 32nd Director of the Census Bureau on November 21, 1994, by Commerce Secretary Ronald Brown. Riche comes to the Census Bureau from the Population Reference Bureau, where she was Director of Policy Studies.

Riche was a founding editor of American Demographics, Inc., where she served from 1979 to 1990. While there, she developed the first national reports on the emerging consumer marketing information industry. She also has served as an economist with the Bureau of Labor Statistics and is the author of over 200 publications, papers, and articles.
