Best ot the Web '95
We are very sorry, but the Best of the Web '95 has been postponed due to circumstances beyond our control. Please DO NOT send me e-mail regarding the awards.
We are hoping to be able to present the Awards at the
Fourth International WWW Conference, being held in December in Boston, Massachusetts. The awards process will likely be managed by the conference organizers,
W3O, and myself, hopefully with other staff.
As with the
BoWeb '94, awards will be presented in several categories (although they may be different than last year's categories), and will likely be in the form of tangible trophies as well as on-line recognition. While the details have not yet been worked out, the award process will probably follow a process like the following:
- Nominations for awards in each category accepted from the general public. This process needs to be open, so that little-known sites can be recognized.
- Final voting will probably be done by a board of expert judges. This is restricted to keep the awards from becoming a popularity contest. How judges will be chosen has not yet been determined.
- The awards will be announced, and trophies presented.
- Award winners will be allowed to display their award on their pages, as well as being listed in the BoWeb exhibit.
Here is a preliminary list of categories (slightly different from last year):
- General Awards
- Best Overall Site
- Best Site by an Educational Institution
- Best Site by a Commercial Organization
- Best Site by a Public Institution (government/non-profit)
- Application Awards
- Best Educational Service
- Best Commercial Service
- Best Entertainment Service
- Best Research Service
- Best Publication (periodicals, books, reports, etc.)
- Most Pioneering Concept
- Best Navigational Aid
- Technical Awards
- Best Document Design
- Best Use of Interaction
- Most Technical Merit
Owing to the exponential growth of the Web over the past year (as well as the demands of my real job), this will not be a one man job again. Thus we welcome any assistance in the following areas (don't contact me yet, please):
- Volunteers to work on the technical side of the awards
- Volunteers or nominations for judges
- Suggestions for the awards process
- Suggestions for awards categories and a logo
- Corporate sponsors are more than welcome, as we will likely need financial help or donations for things like:
- WWW Server space (the computer this currently resides on will not be available)
- Funding for technical staff (I will not be able to handle this myself)
- Tangible trophies
- Travel for presenters
Thank you for your interest. Watch this space
in the summer or fall
for more information, and be sure to tell us what you like out there when the time comes.
