The Space Environment Laboratory (SEL) is an agency of the Department of Commerce, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. The Laboratory provides near-real time space environment information services to its civilian and military customers, conducts research on the solar-terrestrial environment and develops techniques for applying new research insights to its operational services. SEL's Space Environment Services Center, operated jointly by civilian and U.S. Air Force staff, provides recent solar-terrestrial data, summaries, and forecasts to the public via electronic media as well as by U.S. mail. Data are provided in a variety of formats including solar images, text reports, data lists, and data plots.

Sites providing solar-terrestrial data

The Space Environment Laboratory (SEL) provides near-real time solar-terrestrial data in a variety of formats including solar images, text reports, data lists, and data plots. Data are available via WWW, gopher, telnet, anonymous ftp, and dial-in modem connections.

The Solar-Terrestrial Physics division of the National Geophysical Data Center (NGDC) archives data in three main disciplines (Geomagnetism, Ionosphere, and Solar & Upper Atmosphere), and two related satellite programs (DMSP and GOES). Most of the data in the SEL database is archived by NGDC and available on various media. Their CD-ROM with historical solar indices may be of interest to SEL customers.

In addition to solar-terrestrial physics, the National Geophysical Data Center (NGDC) manages environmental data in the fields of solid earth geophysics, marine geology and geophysics, paleclimatology, and glaciology.

The Hiraiso Solar Terrestrial Research Center of the Communications Research Laboratory, Japan, provides a space environment information service providing solar radio spectra, H-alpha images, geomagnetic data, digital ionograms, and a variety of other solar-terrestrial data.

The Space Environment Effects Branch (SEEB) at NASA Lewis works to understand, model, and predict the effects of space environment interactions on spacecraft and its related systems. SEEB maintains a list of space environment and effects resources available through the web.

Sites Providing Solar Images

The Space Environment Laboratory (SEL) maintains current and previous months full-disk magnetograms and Helium 10830 images from Kitt Peak; full-disk and region H-alpha images from Learmonth, Australia and Holloman Air Force Base, New Mexico; as well as full-disk H-alpha images from SEL.

NASA Goddard provides recent images, and archived images, from the SDAC archives. The images include full-disk magnetograms and Helium 10830 wavelength from Kitt Peak, plus x-ray images from the Yohkoh satellite.

National Solar Observatory, Kitt Peak, has daily full-disk magnetograms and Helium 10830 images.

Hiraiso Solar Terrestrial Research Center of the Communications Research Laboratory, Japan, provides a space environment information service on the Internet containing: solar radio spectra, H-alpha images, geomagnetic data, digital ionograms, and a variety of other solar-terrestrial data.

Big Bear Solar Observatory. This gopher site has White light, H-alpha images as both full disk and regions. NOTE: Big Bear requests that images be accessed before 15:00 UT (8:00 am MST) or after 01:00 UT (6:00 pm MST).
