Mail Reflector Service

The Mail Reflector service allows users to send mail to someone without having to know their exact e-mail address. This is possible if the intended recipient has an e-mail address defined in the X.500 Directory. This service is intended to be available for all NASA sites, not just Dryden.

The Mail Reflector will accept SMTP usernames of the form:

    [first.]surname@domain
and forward the message to the correct e-mail address.

The domain must be correctly chosen to identify the target Center (e.g., "X500.HQ.NASA.GOV" for Headquarters). The domain can be specified as either "site.nasa.gov" or as "x500.site.nasa.gov". Local access at any site can be specified as "site" or "x500".

Possible values for site include dfrf, gsfc, msfc, arc, hq, larc, lerc, jsc, ksc, etc. The site values are the standard initials for site names, as used in the NASA Telephone Directory.

In cases where an exact match is not found, the original message is returned to the sender with an error and a list of the approximate matches and their userName, rfc822Mailbox, telephoneNumber, and facsimileNumber object values.

If a unique match is found, but the intended recipent does not have an e-mail address listed in the Directory, a message is sent back informing the user of this and including the recipient's telephone number, fax number, and postal address.

Notes:

  1. Addresses (usernames) are case-insensitive.
  2. If used, the first name can be separated from the surname by a period or an underscore.
  3. QuickMail users will need to use the Special Address feature to reach the Mail Reflector.
