Entrez Fact Sheet

Entrez is a molecular biology database system that presents an integrated view of DNA and protein sequence data along with associated MEDLINE entries. The system is produced by the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) and is available on CD-ROM and the Internet.

Entrez Databases and Retrieval System

The Entrez sequence databases include the complete protein and nucleotide sequence data from GenBank, EMBL, DDBJ, PIR-International, PRF, Swiss-Prot, and PDB. A molecular biology subset of MEDLINE is also included.

The Entrez retrieval system provides a fast and intuitive user interface for searching sequence and bibliographic data. A key feature of the system is the concept of "neighboring", which allows a user to locate related references or sequences within a database. Sequence similarities have been computed using the BLAST local alignment algorithm. In addition, links between MEDLINE and sequence records make it easy to look up MEDLINE abstracts associated with sequence records and vice versa.

Entrez on CD-ROM

Entrez is available on CD-ROM by annual subscription from the U.S. Government Printing Office (GPO) for a cost of $102 (six releases per year, three discs per release). The Entrez CD-ROM operates on Macintosh and on PC-compatible computers with Microsoft Windows 3.1. Use the order form to order by mail or fax from the Superintendent of Documents at GPO. Phone orders are accepted on (202)512-1800, but mail or fax is recommended.

Network Entrez

A client/server version of Entrez, called Network Entrez, provides romote Internet access to databases residing at the NCBI. Direct TCP/IP access to the Internet is required to use the system; e-mail connectivity, such as via BITNET, is not sufficient. To register for Network Entrez, a local systems administrator should contact NCBI by e-mail at net-info@ncbi.nlm.nih.gov.

GenBank (Flat File Format) CD-ROM

In addition to Entrez, which provides databases and retrieval software, a data-only GenBank CD-ROM is also available. The GenBank CD-ROM contains DNA sequence data with translated amino acid sequences in the traditional GenBank flat file format, organized into divisions. No retrieval software is provided. It is available by subscription for $66.00 per year (six releases, two discs per release). Use the order form to order by mail or fax from the Superintendent of Documents at GPO.
