COMMON ISSUES 1. Issue: How do I set up my printer to print in Windows NT? Solution: Run the Add HP JetDirect Printer wizard from the Start Menu, Programs, HP JetAdmin Utilities. Choose Easy Setup and follow the prompts on the screen 2. Issue: A Token Ring HP JetDirect device using a locally administered address will not reset to factory defaults though HP JetAdmin. Solution: The only way to restore the factory default address is to cold reset the HP JetDirect device manually. Refer to your HP JetDirect Print Server documentation. 3. Issue: How do I remove ports created by HP JetAdmin? Solution A: 1. Click on Start, Settings, Printers. Right click on a printer icon in the Printers screen. 2. Click on Properties. 3. Click on the Details tab. 4. Click on Delete Port. 5. Select the HP JetDirect port to be deleted. 6. Click on OK. 7. Repeat this process to delete additional HP JetDirect ports. Note: You cannot delete an HP JetDirect port if it is in use. If the "Print to the following port:" line shows an HP JetDirect port, the printer must be reassigned to use another port (such as LPT1) before that HP JetDirect port can be deleted. 4. Issue: How do I uninstall HP JetAdmin? Solution: If the desire is to remove JetAdmin completely, including all HP JetDirect Ports which have been created, then remove the ports manually prior to uninstalling JetAdmin itself. Refer to the issue above for removing the ports. Otherwise, to remove the JetAdmin software while keeping the HP JetDirect Ports intact, select the "Uninstall HP JetAdmin Utilities" icon created under the HP JetAdmin Utilities group, and follow the instructions. NOTE: If prompted to delete shared .DLL files, it is best not to remove these files. The Uninstall software cannot determine if these common files are used by other applications or drivers. If your version of JetAdmin does not include an uninstaller, a special uninstall utility can be found at the following external ftp site: ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/networking/software/remja_nt.exe This utility was designed specifically for those versions of JetAdmin that did not include their own uninstallers. 5. Issue: Are versions of TCP/IP other than the one that comes with NT supported? Solution: No. All testing was performed using the Microsoft TCP/IP protocol that comes with NT. 6. Issue: How do I configure an HP JetDirect print server for Queue Server Mode under NDS? Solution: This information is available in the HP JetAdmin online Help. Select Help, Help Topics, Novell NetWare Configuration, and Configuring a device in NDS. 7. Issue: Why do I have to log into a specific file server to complete an NDS configuration? Solution: When performing an NDS configuration, a queue is created on a specific file server volume. HP JetAdmin performs a server-based permissions check prior to creating the queue on a file server. 8. Issue: I am unable to manage NDS queues from within HP JetAdmin. Solution: HP JetAdmin displays job information for bindery queues only. Use PCONSOLE or NW Admin to manage NDS queues. 9. Issue: HP JetDirect print servers are not showing up in the list of configured or unconfigured devices. Solution: Select Update Database and refresh (F5) or Rebuild Database and Refresh (F7) from the Device Refresh menu in HP JetAdmin. The discovery options for TCP/IP and IPX/SPX can be configured by selecting Options, Preferences from within HP JetAdmin. Consult the online help for a detailed explanation of the available discovery options. On large networks, it may be necessary to refresh more than once. 10. Issue: When searching for specific addresses under the IPX/SPX Discovery Tab, why would a user want to select where these addresses are stored? Solution: This feature gives more flexibility to the Administrator to manage discovery databases. Select Help on this screen for a detailed explanation of each option. 11. Issue: When performing a subnet ping search of an IP subnet, devices are not displayed in the list of configured or unconfigured printers. Solution: A Subnet ping requires more time to complete than a Local broadcast search. While the search is in progress the discovery indicator is displayed on the taskbar. When discovery has completed, press F6 to display all discovered devices in the HP JetAdmin main screen. F6 is designed to display all devices which responded to the discovery query after the initial screen displayed discovered devices. 12. Issue: A device named "NPIXXXXXX" appears in the configured printers list, where the X's may actually be X's or just placeholders for other hexadecimal numbers. Solution: "NPIXXXXXX" is either an artificial name or the default name for a device on the network. Under normal conditions this name is replaced by the real name of the device. Sometimes this name remains in the printer list if the real name could not be discovered. HP JetAdmin can fail to discover the real name of the device if: A. The card has been reset but the printer has not yet been power cycled. B. In a NetWare environment, an entry has been created in a Jetset.ini file (of the form: NODE=NetworkNumber.NodeAddress) and HP JetAdmin cannot communicate with the device. This could be because the device is no longer on the network or because of network communication problems. Jetset.ini places this entry in the discovery list to indicate that it tried to discover the device but could not. Subsequent discoveries using Jetset.ini will erase the entry. C. The device fails to respond because it is too old to reply to certain requests. D. Network traffic is so heavy we do not have reliable communication. 13. Issue: Are third-party versions of winsock.dll supported? Solution: Hewlett-Packard has tested only the Microsoft winsock.dll. Other winsock.dll files have not been tested, and therefore are not supported with HP JetAdmin. 14. Issue: HP JetAdmin does not reflect a recently reset HP JetDirect card. Solution: Reboot the printer or HP JetDirect EX Print Server. Press F7 from within HP JetAdmin to rebuild the database and rediscover the printers on the network. HP JetAdmin should then properly display the new settings. 15. Issue: HP JetAdmin has been removed but the printer ports still remain. Solution: HP JetDirect Ports will not be removed by running the Uninstall Shield included with JetAdmin versions 2.33 and greater. The port monitor software is removed using this technique. However, the port monitor appears to be active until all the HP JetDirect Ports are removed. Refer to the issue above titled "How do I remove ports created by HP JetAdmin?" 16. Issue: I entered a specific IP address in the hpjaptrs.txt file; how do I remove it? Solution: Open the \winnt\system32\hpjaptrs.txt file with Notepad and delete the entry. 17. Issue: I am using a PC with 2 network cards, but I am only able discover printers on one network segment. Solution: By default, HP JetAdmin treats the primary network interface as the local subnet, and the secondary NIC as a remote subnet. To enable a remote subnet search, select Options, Preferences, TCP/IP Discovery, Advanced and enter the IP address of the secondary NIC as the remote subnet address. 18. Issue: I used Easy Setup to configure my printer, but it only asked me for the IP address. Was a subnet mask assigned? Solution: If Easy Setup is used, the subnet mask and default gateway from the computer are assigned to the printer. NOTE: On computers with multiple network cards it is recommended that Custom Setup be used, giving the user the option to manually assign the subnet mask and default gateway. 19. Issue: Can I print to an HP JetDirect port using Direct Mode IPX if I have a NetWare client loaded? Solution: Printing to an HP JetDirect port using Direct Mode IPX while having a NetWare client loaded is supported as long as the following conditions are met: 1) You cannot be logged into a NetWare file server. 2) You cannot be running a NetWare login script. Since the Microsoft Client for NetWare is installed in Windows 95 by default when the IPX stack for networking is installed, it makes sense that support will be provided for Direct Mode IPX printing when the NetWare client is installed but is not in use to connect to a NetWare server. However, there is an implied intent that printing will occur through a NetWare queue if a NetWare client is installed AND the client is logged into a NetWare server. Hewlett-Packard does not wish to compete or interfere with NetWare printing, and therefore, support for Direct Mode IPX printing is not available when logged into a NetWare server. Alternative: If you must print through an HP JetDirect port while logged into a Netware server, configure the HP JetDirect Port for TCP/IP instead of IPX/SPX. 20. Issue: Why does a "paper airplane" icon appear on my taskbar periodically? Solution: The paper airplane appears on the taskbar whenever a discovery is taking place. A discovery can be launched by either the JetAdmin program itself or the JetAdmin Port Monitor. 21. Issue: Why is a process titled "HPJETDSC.EXE" always running when I look in Task Manager? Solution: HPJETDSC.EXE is the file necessary for the JetAdmin Discovery Indicator (paper airplane in the taskbar). It gets launched automatically through the registry, and remains active to control the Discovery Indicator. 22. Issue: I am printing through IPX configured HP JetDirect Port under Windows NT, and my print job repeatedly prints only partially. Solution: If you have a Windows NT computer running Service Pack 2 or 3, you may experience this problem. Microsoft created a hot fix for this problem, and included the fix in Service Pack 4 as well. 23. Issue: What is the functionality of the box labeled ADD EVERYONE TO LIST OF USERS when creating queues? Solution: In past versions of JetAdmin, the Everyone group was automatically created when configuring JetDirect devices for bindery mode in a Novell environment. Now, this feature is selectable in JetAdmin. When creating a bindery queue, a box labeled ADD EVERYONE TO LIST OF USERS can be de-selected if the desire is to not have the Everyone group created automatically. 24. Issue: I'm using a SET COMMUNITY NAME that ends with a number, and it is not working in JetAdmin when I try to configure a device. Solution: Try entering the SET COMMUNITY NAME with an asterisk (*) at the beginning. This will force JetAdmin to send the SET COMMUNITY NAME intact with the number at the end. Otherwise, JetAdmin drops the number to avoid conflict with external 3-port JetDirect devices that use the number at the end of a SET COMMUNITY NAME to determine the port number. If JetAdmin is no longer prompting for the SET COMMUNITY NAME, perform another discovery by selecting F7. This will erase the cached SET COMMUNITY NAME. ********************************************************************* F.
