How To Uninstall Kermit 95 Manually

The best way to handle installation and uninstallation is through the standard tools offered by the InstallShield installation routines. Uninstalling Kermit 95 is usually just matter of using Add and Remove Programs to remove it. Sometimes, however, the automatic method runs into trouble, and then you'll have to uninstall by hand.

Version 1.1.20 and earlier were not installed with InstallShield, and so can't be uninstalled using "Add or Remove Programs"; you have to do it the old-fashioned way: (1) Make sure K95 is not running; (2) Start a Command (CMD) or "MS-DOS" window; (3) type "cd \k95" (or CD to whatever other directory you installed K95 in); (4) Type "cd .." to go up one level; (5) Type "deltree k95" or "del /s /q k95" (depending on which OS you have). If this fails, you might have to reboot and try again.

Optional Pre-Uninstall step:

If you are still able to run the Kermit 95 program (K95.EXE or K95G.EXE) it would be a good idea to do so and then type:

echo \v(appdata)
echo \v(common)

and record the pathnames that these two commands return. You'll need them later.

1. First make sure that you are not running any of the Kermit 95-related executables. Shut down K95.EXE, K95G.EXE and/or K95DIAL.EXE. Also, check the Task Manager (NT, 2000 or XP) or the Close Program Dialog (95, 98 or Me) for the following process:

   krbcc32s.exe
   

   which tends to stay loaded in memory. If you find it, end it.

2. Delete the appropriate "Kermit 95" program directory. This is installed in Program Files by default and may be called "Kermit 95", "Kermit 95 2.0", or "Kermit 95 2.1" depending on the version you have installed.

3. Next you will need to locate and delete a few registry keys. As always, it is a good idea to make a backup copy of your registry before you make any changes to the registry.

   The first step will be to locate the keys associated with the Uninstall information. Once this is deleted then subsequent installations will be able to proceed normally. The best way to do this is to search for the unique GUID that is associated with each installer package. This differs depending on which package you have installed. Here is a list of the most common Kermit 95 install packages and their GUIDs. If you cannot locate any of these, contact us at kermit-support@columbia.edu.

   This should locate a key under the registry path:

   HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\
   

   so, for instance the key for the K95 2.1 Full Crypto version would be:

   HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\
        CurrentVersion\Uninstall\{C5770D38-FE64-4BCF-B3E2-D018081CE31E}
   

   If for whatever reason, you do not find the GUID that you would expect to find, browse through the keys that are in this format in the Uninstall section. Look on the right side of the Regedit screen for values that are related to Kermit 95.

   Once you have located the key in question, highlight it and delete it.

   Next look in:

   HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\App Paths
   

   for any keys related to Kermit 95. These will be some variation of the executable name, e.g. "k95.exe", "k95g.exe", "k9521.exe", etc... Highlight and delete these.

4. Delete user-specific information by locating the Kermit 95 directory under the paths that you found in the Optional Pre-Uninstall step. If you could not run Kermit 95 to do this step, then for Windows 2000 and XP look here:

   C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Kermit 95
   

   for system-wide Kermit 95 information. And here:

   C:\Documents and Settings\username\Application Data\Kermit 95
   

   for user-specific Kermit 95 information. This assumes that C: is the drive the Windows is installed on. username should be filled in with the username that you are currently logged in with, and the usernames of anyone else on the system that may have used Kermit 95.

   For Windows NT, these folder should be under C:\WINNT\Profiles (assuming the default location and folder name for Windows NT.

   For Windows 95/95/Me, these folders should be located under C:\WINDOWS\Application Data.

   Once you have located the Kermit 95 folders, you can delete them. NOTE: You will be deleting any customized settings that you may have created and all dialer entries, etc. by removing these folders!

Once you have followed these steps, Kermit 95 is completely removed from your system.
