New Software Tools Empower Christian Youthworkers

AUSTIN, TX (September 9, 1996) -- Christian youthworkers, long known for being short of time, can now save both time and effort thanks to two innovative new electronic tools from NavPress Software. The Youthworker’s Encyclopedia provides quickly-accessible background research on youth topics through a massive electronic file of facts, statistics, and discussion ideas. The LESSONmaker 4 Youth Meetings combine a topical library of youth meeting group activities with the popular LESSONmaker program. Both databases are prepared in the industry-standard STEP format so that they are compatible with Parsons(r) QuickVerse(r) Library, as well as WORDsearch, LESSONmaker, and other STEP-compliant programs.

"Bringing youth to Christ is the most important ministry in America today, in my view," said Dr. Jim Sneeringer, software developer of WORDsearch and LESSONmaker, "but youthworkers have, until now, been poorly served by advances in Christian software. These two new products help correct that by combining excellent youth-oriented resources with a state-of-the-art electronic library system."

Youthworkers typically have many roles and responsibilities competing for their time while they deal with a complex and rapidly changing culture. They have a real need for information and idea starters, but little time for library research. The two new NavPress Software youth products provide "just-in-time" assistance that can help youthworkers be better prepared and more confident.

The Youthworker’s Encyclopedia is an electronic database of over 1,000 pages of facts, statistics, opinions, case studies, and discussion ideas covering 295 carefully selected topics of vital interest to youth. It is a practical handbook of ideas that can be put into action immediately in youth group meetings, one-on-one counseling, and spur-of-the-moment inquiries. Professor Dean Borgman, regional director of Young Life and holder of the Culpepper Chair of Youth Ministries at Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary, compiled the Encyclopedia over a decade of accumulation from his own research and that of his associates and students.

The LESSONmaker 4 Youth Meetings contain an extensive library of exercises and activities organized into "meeting kits" on 150 areas of youth interest. Users assemble meeting plans by browsing the resources and clicking to pop selected pieces into a plan window. Each meeting kit contains 15 to 25 exercises categorized into "starters," "discussions," "challenges," and "extras" plus supplementary material including related Bible verses, book introductions, and outlines. In all, there is enough material for about four years of weekly meetings ranging from Sunday School to small group to retreats and special events. The meeting kits were developed by Dave Veerman, a well-known author of books for Christian youth and youth leaders with 26 years of experience with Youth for Christ.

STEP, an acronym for Software Template for Electronic Publishing, specifies a common format for recording Bible study materials on computer-readable media. STEP was defined and is supported by Parsons Technology, NavPress Software, White Harvest, Loizeaux Brothers, and others. Before STEP, Bible study programs could not read material published by vendors of a different program. Now, programs built on STEP can access any material published in STEP format from any software developer or publisher.

The LESSONmaker 4 Youth Meetings are available with the LESSONmaker program for $59.95. The Youthworker’s Encyclopedia is available as a standalone STEP database for $49.95. Both products are combined in the Youthworker’s Library with WORDsearch, LESSONmaker, and a substantial Bible study library with a selection of popular resources priced at $179.95. All these products are available immediately on CD-ROM for Windows 95 or Windows 3.1.
